View Full Version : 4.5 or 5 quarts of oil?

Okay, both my fiancee's car ('02 Alero/2.2) and my Mazda 3 take 4.5 quarts of oil. I talked to my GM service manager and he said he always puts 5 quarts in because he doesn't want 1/2 a quart lying around. Now, is it possible that this is too much oil?
The dipstick on the mazda sucks ass and you can't read it, so I can't tell whether there's not enough oil or too much oil in it.

Why would there be 1/2 Quart lying around ?
Don't they use bulk motor oil, that is in a big tank ?

I worked at an oil change place, and they had three tanks of different oil. The only time you would have partial bottles was if someone asked for bottled oil. Maybe the manager guy was talking about if he did an oil change at home?

I'm pretty sure he was talking about his personal vehicles, seeing as he doesn't change oil in cars anymore (hence service manager).
