View Full Version : 2.2 5spd won't shift into reverse

2002 Grand Am SE1 2.2 5spd stick
It won't shift into reverse. (Physically, the shift lever won't go into reverse)
I just got this car, as a repairable, and have never driven it in reverse.

i would have a look at the tranny and the lines up to the shifter... i would check pretty much from teh tranny to the threads on teh knob itself. i know that it doesnt help much, but from the sounds of it, it could be anything from air in the lines to something blocking the shifter in someway

Isn't there a switch that you must move, before it is allowed to go into R ?
& don't you have to park the car in R to take your key out ?
my alero, it has to be in reverse for the key to come out. GetRag transmission safety thing...
...My cavalier with the getrag dosen't do that. Theres just a release button by the steering colum to release the key. There is a reverse lock-out lever thats has to be pulled up in order to shift into reverse....but not to release the key.

Does the 5 speed in the GA have a lock-out solenoid? If so thats where I'd start. The solenoid, when not energized, is what makes it impossible to shift into reverse when the car is moving forward. At zero, and very slow speeds it is energized and the gate for reverse is open. If this solenoid is not getting power reverse would always be locked out.

Nevermind, someone can delete this. I finally figured out how the shifter is supposed to work. I'm stupid.

Yeah that's what I did.
Now it threw a code when I put it in reverse, probably from me trying to force it into reverse without lifting the collar. "service vehicle soon" One more thing to fix.

Just a thought... I wonder if the BCM checks whether or not the reverse light is working? I would make sense that this when the SVS came on is when he shifted it into reverse.

It's slipping in reverse - would this be the reverse idle gear?
