Well after putting my rims on, i noticed how rusted and ugly my rear rotors are. So I want to paint them. There is however alot of rust and i have no idea how to get rid of it. I could steel wool it but that would take ages.
any tips?

I taped it off, prepped/steel wooled and painted black them with a high temp paint. I did it about 3 months ago and it still looks good.

will brake cleaner get rid of the rust?

Brake cleaner seemed to get a lott of the surface/loose rust off. A steel wool rag really got most of it off.

This is about the only way you can do it. Its gonna be time consuming but anything worth while is gonna be.

The easiest way is to sand blast them. A wire brush comes in second.
I used caliper paint on the rotor centers and the outer edges. The calipers get a fresh coat of ordinary Krylon every spring.
I saw one guy that just sprayed the whole area and let the pads wear the over spray off. It filled in the cross drilling and slots. I don't know if that's good or bad but it worked for him.

I thought painting rotters wasn''t a good idea. Atleast thats what i remembered reading. Doesn't the paint wear off pretty quick or effect the breaks when paint residue/dust gets on those pads? Surprised it lasted 3 months though.

You tape off where the pads hit the rotor.

I'm suddenly reminded of that thread where the guy went nuts with the paint can on his calipers...
Edit-
Took some searching but I found it

How would you keep the SW on the ball?

Bad idea. Even if you could keep the steel wool on, you would have wool fibers and rust in the foam ball. It would scratch everything you try to clean.

can't you buy a wire brush bit for a drill? I'm pretty sure my dad has one.

I know you said you have access to a shop..at the one I go to there's a bench grinder with steel wool on it. I think that's your best bet if you have one. It works wonderss.

i ended up finding one of those ^^ in my tool box, worked great, however it looks like a disc conversion is more of an option right now to fit my rims on so....
