1) Can anyone tell me about the pistons under the username? It appears to be related to number of posts, but I am curious if someone could please elaborate.
2) Reputations... why should they be used and is there a place you can view a rating on this?
3) Are #1 and #2 related?

1. They're just related to the number of posts.
2. They're used to give people a good or bad reputation basically. The little green square under your posts is your reputation. If it's red..you're a terrible, terrible person. Lay your mouse over it and it'll give you your reputation status thing.

To view what reputation points you've been given, click the "User CP" link at the top of your screen. It will take you to a page that shows what reps you've been given as well as what warnings you may have received.
The reasoning behind the rep system is that eventually new people can tell what posters are knowledgable about subjects and which are not to be trusted based upon what the community thinks of them as expressed through their reputation.
Our rep system is quite new so you won't see anyone with an exceptional reputation..but give it about a year or so and you'll start to realise what posters have something to offer and what posters more or less are taking up space. :)
