My bro. has his resonator cut off on a 1998 Grand Prix GTP and it sounds great. I am going to chop my resonator off hopefully w/in the next week (just got an electronic cut-out, so it should sound great...). Keep us posted...

does the exhaust resonator effect my emissions testing? Will i have to put it back on if i ever have an emissions test? Also, if i have a custom cai, would my resonator be off or is it still on? One more thing, will taking these resonators off be harmful to the car? Im not to familiar with resonators so that why i asked million 1 questions.

thanks

peace

I believe that the resonator acts like another "muffler" (Correct me if I'm wrong). I had my resonator removed on my Focus, and I didn't have any problems...that's saying a lot for a Ford. LOL. My brother has his resonator removed on a Grand Prix GTP....and no problems. As far as emissions go, I also believe (again... correct me if I am wrong), that it depends on what state you live in... Sorry for the lack of definite answers, but I tried.

It gives it a lot deeper sound at idle and it gives you a lot of engine noise when you hammer it. My sister did it to her 02 GA GT and it sounds sweet for spending $20 bucks at a muffler shop.
Overall you will love it. I am always getting asked is she got a performance exhaust before I did.

A resonator gets rid of the treble end of the exhaust note (from my understanding)... it's basically there to make the exhaust quiet. So by cutting it off, you will be louder. It has nothing to do with emissions since that's all the job of the Catalytic converter. And a custom CAI is in the engine. The resonator is under the car after your catalytic converter. Completely independent. Won't hurt the car, it's mostly for sound. You might end up with higher pitched exhaust note though.

nope, shouldnt have any probs with emissions, its is just another "muffler" to muffle the sounds some more for interioir noise levels and exterior. Will not effect the car at all, except u may feel more top eno pull and less bottom end course these would be VERY small gains or lossezs

am i able to put the resonator back on if i dont like it. Also, i heard that if you take the resonator off, you lose all warranty on the entire vehicle. I heard that from someone and i didnt think that sounded right. Could be wrong though.

I believe you'll need to have some welding done to take it off and put it back on, so you probably can... as far as the warranty, if i take off the resonator, they won't fix my car radio? hehe, it just removes the warranty on the part you modify or if it has a direct effect on other parts.

Well just to update everyone who participated in the thread, i went to midas this morning and found out that when the guy put on my cat back system, he already cut the resonator off. I had no clue that he cut it off. Oh well, i was told if i want more sound, to go with a free flow converter. So it looks like im gonna check that out. Thanks for everyones replies.

What cat back system did you have put on your car? The Borla or SLP? Cause I know the SLP doesn't use a resonator anyway and I'm not so sure about the Borla.

I had this guy from the muffler shop make me the custom fit magnaflow system.

wtf hmm, I don't know if my resonator is still on in that case... I didn't check and I'm away at college so I can't check... I'm kinda surprised that they would just remove it for fun :)

Im kind of surprised too now that i find out. Oh well now i dont have to worry about cutting it off. At least he couldve told me. I thought i had a choice if i wanted it on or not. I guess some places do it that way.

i've gota "mostly stock" GAGT 98 V6 and i'm gonna have the resonator removed then afterwards when i have enough saved i'm gonna have them put 2.5" stainless steel piping from the cat-back to the flowmasters, to the 3" chrome tips...

The intake resinator is your airbox and is a little black tube. It is also in your fenderwell...All this does it to make your intake quiter. As far as the exhaust resinator, I have the SLP Cat-Back and mine does not have one. With it not there, it makes it a little bit louder inside the car and a bit more raspy outisde the car. I love it! Everyone hears the car rumbling down the street and when they look and see its a Grand Am, the look on their face is pricesless!

I'm going tomorrow to get it cut off. I was just wondering, at idle can you hear it in the car. Or is it just slightly louder than stock?
