I just purchased a '95 Grand Am Gt from my niece. Runs great and looks good; but she messed up......she blew out the radiator....replaced it and couldn't afford antifreeze so she put straight water in and she pulled the thermostat out. It has only been a month or so since she did this. Everything was checked out and no damage done to the motor.

My question is with the exception of replacing the coolant and the thermostat is there anything else I should do like flushing the entire system?

Also I know there is an argument as to which coolant to use but any opinion is appreciated.

Flush it, fill it, you "should" be fine.........

& replace that thermostat before it gets cold.

Yeah, drain and fill it with new 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Use distilled from the store, not tap water, it's cheap and it's better for the cooling system. And definitely buy a new thermostat and put that back in. As for which coolant to use, it's actually getting difficult to find the old green stuff in auto parts stores now. Everything is going to extended life coolant. You can use that and it will be fine as long as your system is clean and it's properly filled and bleed so there is no air in the system. Air tends to make it gunk up. The only thing is, if the car has ever been filled with the old green coolant, you can use the new coolant but it still has to be changed every 3 years instead of 5 years. Basically it loses it's "long life" properties because of remnant molecules of the old coolant.

Thanks guys....I got the new thermostat and 2 gal of dexcool plus the super flush. I am planning on doing this all tomorrow. I looked in the reservoir and man what a mess.

As a side note i was messing around this afternoon on the way home from getting the paper work done and just wanted to see what it would do......i got 95 mph in a 1/4 mile from a dead stop......phew what a ride....

That's got the 3100 in it doesn't it?

You might have got to 95mph, but it wasn't in a quarter mile. That car isn't capable of reaching that speed in a true quarter mile.

When you do the flush and fill, you might want to just take the coolant reservoir completely out and flush it with clean water first to get all the gunk out first. They aren't very hard to remove.

How much does 2 gallons of coolant cost these days?

I'm saying. You can at least get the cheap **** from Dollar General or some place of that nature for around 2 or 3 bucks.

Yes

true...now that i think about it it may have been a bit further....you have to take into consideration I am used to a ford escort with a 1.9 that it would take about 5 mile on a downhill grade with a push to make 95 mph.

cost me like $12.95 for 2 gallon of DexCool, $1.64 for 2 gallon of distilled water, $3.99 for the Flush and $7.00 for the thermostat.
