Stock unit with factory upgraded Delco Monsoon audio on a '01. But lately bass has been buzzy and poppy sounding. And on average I don't have it turned loud by terribly much. Maybe 2 or 3 bars for volume on the head unit.

Do the standard speakers simply wear out or fail at this point in time? On occasion I do turn them up loud (somewhere around 4 bars), but I would think they should handle what the stock system does without getting blown.

Or could it be something stupid electrical wise? Bad ground somewhere or something like that. Also from what I understand, the Monsoon setup has an amp with it. I use the trunk a lot for hauling stuff, think something bouncing around could have knocked that off-kilter?

I do like having rich smooth bass, but the buzzy poppy bass the stereo has been making lately sounds ghetto. Loud is not enjoyable if there's no fidelity to it, and right now it's not like it used to be. Knowing what to troubleshoot first would be a help.

sounds like the amp is on its way out.

Anything that could be fixed? (Like a bad cap that could be soldered out?) Or is the board inside a sealed unit? (Covered in epoxy or whatever it is that they do with some circuits.)

Was hoping it'd be something that would be easy & cheap to take care of...

Almost seems like the amp is stuck "turned up" on the bass, but only for the back two speakers. (But not turned up in a good way, since it's overdriving a certain range into distortion.) Seems kinda lame that the one bit with no moving parts is the thing that fails after the car is paid for. ...Actually, this would be the second electronic bit with no moving parts to fail. (Blower motor resistor was the first one.)

Dunno if there's some sub switch or jumper on the stock amp hidden away somewhere that could overdrive and distort the regular speakers. (As said before, I throw stuff in the trunk a bit, books, sodas, groceries, etc.) Already checked the plugs, but they seemed kinda snug. And there's a lot of wires going to the thing, wouldn't know where to begin to see if there's a bad one.
