i have a 99 grand am se. the water pump has been leaking for a while. trying to avoid the 900$ shop fee quote. how would be the best way to attack this problem? i have the 2.4L engine. i have disconnected the upper exhaust manifold, to address the water pump. that alone has taken me about 6 hours with about 18 bolts that are hidden. i know that i have to take about 4 different items off the engine to be able to remove the water pump.
but my only problem is knowing if the car has a zero tolerance engine, meaning if i time it wrong i get bent valves, or if i need to time it.... how would i go about doing that correctly?
this job will probably take me about a week but its saving me about 750$ in labor.
any help would be great
