Ok just got a pair of Infinity 6x9 references and a pair of Infinity 4x6 references for my birthday. Will I need to change the wiring in the car at all to install these or is there anything else I'll need to take care of?

Thanks

My stereo thingie says Delco so I assume thats what it is...The car's a 2000 with the upgraded stereo system, so whatever comes with that.

if you have the monsoon system, which is sounds like you do, you will have to use differnt wiring.

yup diffrent wireing it is. Its not to hard. just time consuming

Any explanation on how to do this or a link to another thread? :angel

well it depends. Are you planing on using a new amp to power these speakers or planing on getting an aftermarket deck. If so then you will have to run all the speaker wires from the speakers to where ever you locate the amp and then the appropriate wires from that to the headunit.

If you are using the stock deck then it depends on what system you have? If you have the monsoon system then ur kinda screwed and need to get a new amp.

If it is the other one with out the amp in the trunk then u can just stick the speakers in with the stock wire that is already in the doors and rear deck.

just hook it up. i had my 6x9s like that for a while and nothing bad will happen. but if u are a contasuer of music more, rerun wire fromthe back of ur deck to ur speakers FTW. or just get a 4ch to amp em with.

He has a 2000 GAGT, monsoon didnt come on GAs until 01.

Heres how to wire them:
all you will have to do is just hook up the front 4x6s and bolt em in. there is one POSITIVE and NEGATIVE wire for each speaker.

for the rears, just run new wires from the back of the HU to each speaker. and that will bypass the stock Delco amp.

Can I ask why I need to run new wires for the 6x9's and not for the 4x6's? Thanks for the help guys.

cause the 6x9s have 4 wires going to them from the stock amp.

Not to hijack the thread, but how do you wire them if you have the monsoon deck? One of my 6x9's has finally shyt the bed and I want to get a new pair. I was thinking Pioneer.

If you're running an aftermarket headunit, the easiest way is to bypass the Monsoon amp.

(If you're only doing new rear speakers, you only need to follow the second part of that.)

If you're still running the factory headunit, it's probably not worth it. You could bypass the amp as shown in the link I posted, but the factory deck probably only puts out like 7w. Wouldn't hurt to try, though.

You don't need to run new wires in a 2000. All you have to do is unplug the factory amp. Then IIRC, either set of wires going into the factory 6x9 will work. You'll have to test it to find out.

I think that for each rear speaker in the Delco-amped systems, one pair of wires is full-range and the other pair is low-passed (and amped). So only one pair for each speaker will actually work once the stock amp is unplugged, but at least you can get full-range signal out of that pair (unlike the Monsoon system). Not 100% sure on that, though.

But he has the "Premium" sound system. The HU power's the front 4x6, then the amp powers the 6x9s like the monsoon.

I think the deck AND the amp power the rear 6x9s. IIRC the deck portion is full-range.

That sound about right. I use to know this back in 2002

Actually when you unplug the amp both sets of wires still have a signal. I believe all HP bandlimiting is done with resistors in the speaker while the amp has a LP filter integrated into it. I havn't scoped the signals to find out for sure, but that's what it appears to me after messing with them. IIRC the mid/tweeter is 10ohm and the woofer is 4ohm.

If I take the 4x6's and exchange them for another size, what size should I go with, how much are they and how hard are they to install?

Also, where do I get hte adapter?

6.5s and from what i read it's easy. You can get the adapters from your local stereo shop, crutchfield, ebay, and many other places on the web.

6.5s are possible but 5.25s are significantly easier.

I got my adapters from Crutchfield because I couldn't find them at any local shops. Part number is Metra 82-3300.

I drive a 2004 grand am gt coupe monsoon mp3 system ..Im kinda new to all this .. i put in a new deck.. and a one channnel amp connected to a sub. Sounds great. wasnt gonna replace the stock speakers but after about 2 days i realized they suck and distort. Ive got aftermarket speakers for the front and rear but havent put them in yet. Im reading all this stuff about bypassing the monsoon amp and running wires from the Deck to the speakers. I was wondering if its possible to just wire the after market speakers to the factory amp in the trunk? If so how can i do it...this would be nice consideirng i would get some extra power without spending cash. Sorry if this was already posted but i have read as much as i could find and didnt see anything about using the amp. Thanks- Jason

You really can't. The Monsoon amp takes the four channels from the headunit (front left, front right, rear left, rear right) and basically splits them into eight (front left high/low, front right high/low, etc.) If you throw in a set of aftermarket speakers, you can only use one set of wires for each speaker (high OR low) and it won't sound good.

Since you've already got an aftermarket deck, the best thing you can do without buying more equipment is bypass the Monsoon amp (your new headunit probably puts out more (and cleaner) power than the Monsoon anyway ;)). But you really need to bypass the amp at the same time you install the new speakers. My tutorial posted elsewhere in this thread will walk you through the process. It's fairly painless.

the by passing only requires running wires from the speakers to the amp harness correct????

You can, but it's not even required. You can just splice the wires going into the amp with the corresponding ones coming out of the amp, using the link I posted. Then attach the corresponding wires that are already in place for the factory speakers to your new ones (remember, you'll only be using one pair per side.

Alternately, you can tap into the wires going INTO the amp (signal from the headunit) and run new wires right from there to your new speakers.
