Ok, So I've got this grinding noise & vibration up front. It started kinda quiet back in june, but now is a dull roar making it difficult to hear the radio or a phone call. From my searches on the forum, I get the idea that several other people have had this issue, but I don't see a definite cause. I believe it's coming from the driver's side, because I'd swear it's right beneath my feet.

I changed the spindle today with a new one, and rotated the front tire to the back, the noise is still there. As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to be making a popping or clicking that you usually get from a bad CV joint, but I've never heard a bad one before, so I'm not certain that the CV is actually good. I need some advice. The Cv joint is $80 for a new unit, and having replaced the hub and rotated the tire, I don 't know what else it could be, but I don't want to waste another $80 on a part that isn't bad. Any suggestions??

Wheel bearing.

Wheel bearing.

I changed the wheel bearing (driver's side). It's not the same "whoop whoop" noise I've heard on other wheel bearing failures either. It's constant grinding, and gets a lot louder with speed. Based on the sound I was never entirely certain it was the bearing. With a new unit on there, I know it's not it.

I should have mentioned the sound changes a little if I'm in a turn, it's quieter in one direction, and the pitch changes slightly in the other. I don't know if that matters or not.

Check to see if the brake shield is touching the back of your rotor?

Check to see if the brake shield is touching the back of your rotor?

That's a good suggestion, but I checked everything out on both sides when I replaced the brakes a couple months ago. This was well after the noise started. Everything looked fine as far as I can tell on both sides. The Cv boots look in good condition, but I've started hearing a single "pop" *sometimes* when I make sharp turns, like into a driveway or turning corners. This is making me think even more that it might be the CV joint. Still I'd like to hear from someone that has had this problem before and what they did to fix it. Nobody that's needed to replace a CV is reading this forum??

DarkNight- Did you ever figure out what was the problem? I have the same problem with my car, and i really don't want to waste a bunch of money trying things that you've already tried. If you figured anything out, please help me out!

Ya when i make sharp turns mine grinds a little as well. CV joints were ok, but noise still persists.

Wheel bearing most likely. If noise gets louder when you turn left then its the right side bearing. If the noise gets more quite when your turn left then its the left side bearing.

Yeah, you guys were right, I replaced the passenger bearing and the noise got a ton better, but was still there. However, the noise was opposite when I turned the wheel, so I was pretty sure the noise was the other bearing going out. Then it got worse over the last few weeks so I got a chance last night to put in a new one and it fixed it. So if one hub didn't fix the problem for other people, the other hub could be out too.

how easy/difficult was it for you to change the bearing. Mine is out on the passenger saide. Has been for a year now but the noise is now unbearable. My shop quoted me $220 I think. Should I try this. I did almost all the work on my MR2 back in the day....but never this.

wow....didnt realize this issue had been covered so much!!!. Actually, couldn't have imagined it would've been...thats why i didnt run a search. Never seen so many of the same model car have this kind of issue that there would be a "how to" about it. Never seen this on any other car forum i am apart of.

Why do the GA's/Alero suffer from this? Sounds like its a big enough problem that it should be FSB. or course, i havent checked that....it very well may be.

Thanks for the link though.

WTF

Changing a wheel bearings isn't anything special for any car. Wheel bearings are one of the wear items on any car. They dont last forever. If they go bad sooner it jsut means they probably have had a harder life than most.

This a universal fact not a specific issue to any vehicle.

ALSO:

If you wait until a bearing is so bad that it vibrates terribly and grinds so loud you cant hear things then you have waited way to long and are a fool.

I just started getting what I think might be this problem (wheel bearing noise) on my GA. I was doing some searching thru the topics/posts and saw this, and read all of the entries. I thought that my "noise" could be the wheel bearings, but wasn't really clear on what that noise sounds like. I also wondered if the CV joints could be the culprit. Mine is kind of a grinding/clicking sound, with a sort of whine mixed in for good measure. All at the same time. My car is an auto trans, and you really can only hear it when you start out in first gear and accelerate quickly...like as in jump on it a bit. If I start out slowly, it doesn't make the noise. Does that sound like the wheel bearings to you guys? Thanks.

I think this would be a worn CV because of the clicking. Does it make the same clicking while turning?

A bad bearing would get louder as you went faster because of high revolutions.

I got the exact same stupid noise, likewise it feels like its right under my feet, its louder at high speeds, and only happens on right turns, I have a lot of broken stuff on my right front side suspension area, due to a massive pothole the city wouldn't cover, I broke the strut mount, tore the boot, bent a rim, bubbled the tire, and I have this problem also, but it seems like you guys are coming to an agreement on its either the cv joint, or wheel bearing right?, well this thread helped me a lot, cause I didn't want to spend $90/hr getting a diagnostic before fixing the problem.
