I have a 99 Grand Am SE with 145000 miles, 3400 auto with no mods. The service engine soon light came on so I had Autozone scan it. The scan reported a code 1404, a sticking EGR valve. The valve cost $253 at Autozone, so they recommended I clean it with carb cleaner and fine sandpaper. It didn't seem that sticky, but I suppose it doesn't take much. I cleaned it, and the SES hasn't reappeared, although it has only been one day.

Has anyone else tried cleaning their EGR rather than getting a new one?

I have 2 EGR valves laying around (2000 + model, where its oval at the inlet where it bolts up to the upper intake manifold). Hit me up if u want them, if thats the one u have. But since yours is a 99.. its prolly the 3 bolt triangle base looking one.

There is an ECM reflash to prevent the false setting of DTC P1404. Might look into that.
