Hey, I have a grand am se v6 2001, with about 175k, Had it about 3-4 years, Anyways i Have always had to put coolant in the tank, sometimes more than often. Lately it has been leaking alot, and collecting on the right side of the engine. I took it to a place that said it was the lower intake gasket, they had to replace that and valve gaskets. It was 200 in parts and 450 in labor, is that a good deal. he also said that pending how it looks it may need machining, or cracked.... what are yalls experience in this, and is that a good price to fix the problem? I am buying a house next month and cannot afford investing thousands to fix my car nor can i afford payments... Any help is much appreciated.

its not a bad deal...i know of some places that charge around 800...so no its not a bad deal.

r u in anyway mechanicly inclined? cause if u are at least a little bit, its not a hard job. the gaskets ull need r the upper, lower, and valve cover gaskets and some o rings (search threads, very popular subject) and get a chiltons or haynes manual!!

good luck

Very reasonable, doesn't beat doing it yourself though..assuming you do it correctly.

i only paid $325

You had to have a friend or something for that one.
The lowest I found in my area was 600$
The most expensive was 900$

And all the dealers said that was Flat Rate timed... b/s if ya ask me.

I got mine done twice. First time was 600ish and 2nd was 1500. 2nd time was more than just the LIM though.

And this work was done by my friends dad who OWNS a shop...So i basically didnt pay taxes and the labor was cut in half at least...

The place that did it for 325 is prolly shady as all hell..Like remember that scandal a while back where a mechanic was found hitting the head of a engine with a hammer wrapped in a cloth to make the person have to pay lol.....

Even if you're not completely mechanically inclined you should still be able to do it yourself. Read through my walkthrough and it should give you an idea of what it's like.

I was quoted $1200 at the dealer for the same job. The car is for sale.
