where do i loosen up the belt on 3100?? im puttin in a new alternator and couldnt figure how to get it off....dummy question, i know.....

On the tensioner pulley there is a slot that you can stick a 3/8"drive ratchet into. Just push that off to the side and it will take the tension off of the belt. A ratchet or breaker bar with a longer handle will work well. They also make a tool for it. It is relatively inexpensive ($30ish at most) and most auto parts stores rent them.

If it is the same as the 3400 it is located almost directly below the alternator pulley about half way down on the engine.
