I changed out my Catalitic converter with a cheaper Higher flow alternative to the OEM.
I now have codes from the cat. Is there a way to reprogram the computer to avoid the lights coming on?

Well unless the A/F ratio changed, and the computer is complaining about it. That would throw a code. It did the same thing with me and my old ranger. changed out the full exhaust and it was showing I was running to rich and threw a code.

Disconnect the battery for 20 to 30 minutes. The PCM will have to go into learn mode. Once it knows the new values it MAY turn off the light. Cheap and easy first.
Hope that fixes it.

Sometimes aftermarket catalytic converters don't operate at the PCMs expected efficiency. This will set a Catalyst System Low Efficiency code. P0420. The only way to fix this issue is to replace the cat with an OEM part, use an O2 simulator or reprogram the PCM with the code deleted.

Talk to Mark/lvemy3100 (http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/member.php?u=10977) of MP Racing (http://www.mpracing.org/)

PS: Mark even has his Custom PCM Tuning (http://www.mpracing.org/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=92) on sale at $100 US.
& since you live near him, you could make an appointment to see him in-person.

I second the statement about mark. very nice gut to deal with. and 100 bucks is a steal. Tuned pcm is the best bang for your buck IMO.

thought I should throw this out there... if you are in need of nothing more than to get rid of the codes for a highflow cat I would be happy to do this for you in person for $25...

FYI for the locals - I am currently working on new pricing structure for PCM services but anytime that you come to me to have your PCM worked on it will be less than if you were to send it in..

if you need a price quote or are just curious and want to know more please feel free to email me at pcmtuning@mpracing.org

Thanks for the info everyone. I emailed Mark a minute ago. the code I am having is what was stated above (Catalyst System Low Efficiency code. P0420)
Hopefully I can stop by this week and have them take care of it for me. I also have bad speed sensors that never have worked right. I plan on trying to fix the wiring once and for all. Then maybe my Grand Am's instrument panel won't look like a Christmas tree all the time anymore. SES, SVS, TRAC OFF, ABS, good thing the tire pressure monitors weren't engaged on my 2001.

Mark Hooked up my PCM and took care of the Engine light from the Cat problem.
Mad Props to MP racing... Thanks Mark

I also tore apart my wheel bearing/hub assembly. This one hasn't been changed yet unlike the other side on the front. It has been replaced 3 times.

We had to beat on the hub for hours before it would come out due to rusting itself in there. Talk about a pain in the butt.

No more Christmas tree lights on the dash anymore... 160,000 miles and looks brand new.
