My cars gas milage is ass right now. I figure at the moment my MPG is roughly 14MPG highway ;crap . I just got my oil,oil filter, plugs and wires changed 3 days ago. My tire pressure is OK, and that is where i stand. What am I missing, my air filter is good. What else should I be looking at?

Fuel filter maybe? I am sure others will have better answers.

Fuel filter is the next easy/cheap thing to swap out.

51xxx miles. Im gonna get the fuel filter changed sometime later this week. On another note I have what I believe to be a bad 3rd clutch pack..at least. So possible that my moderate intermittent tranny issues is why im sucking down gas...

Edit: Im also thinking about seafoaming...any thoughts on that?

Oh yeah thats what I meant... I think simple green is like a counter top cleaner. But Seafoam was what I meant.

Cosign. Seafoam is great.

Try Marvels Mystery Oil- it's a cheap fuel additive cleaner that has always helped my mileage when I put it in every few fuel tanks. It's worth a try and only about 5 bucks.

Seafoam is the bomb. I use it twice a year no matter what my vehicles are doing.

A lot if it's clogged.

heh well, i had my car in to change my alternator a month ago and like i thought id have him do the fuel filter at the same time. i got the car with 88k on it, and now it has 93k. im trying to do a tune up bit by bit, as you can prbly see by some of my mods. anyways, i got a GM fuel filter from Adavance, and i give it to my mechanic to change... puts the car up on tha lift and says DAMNN this is an old looking filter. i ask him if its possibly the same one the car came with, he says maybe.....

anyways, he goes to change it and i got the wrong one somehow. soo, its been put off kinda but im gonna get it done this week. my freakin mileage is going somewhere, i got a mark's pcm and a cai with a new filter on it baically and i know im not even getting mid 20s.....

Last city mileage I got was 10mpg. Probably has something to do with warming it up once it a while, but I rarely do that. We'll see how it goes through this next tank. Probably could use to clean my filter...its been almost a year now...

ya i know it isnt, the fuel lines are slightly corroded due to beign 1. 90k on the car, and 2. all the freakin salt they use around here so i dont wanna touch it. plus i dont have jack stands, and im sure he's not gonna charge me much to change it out...

i figured you meant seafoam, i just wasnt sure. Now ive seen lots of threads about it, but can someone just post the end-all how-to on how to seafoam the car?

Mine is also sucking gas like crazy right now. Ned to replace my filter as well and tune it up. I think the winter gas formulation doesn't help either.

I'm getting about 17-18mpg now, and I thought that was bad.
man.

Well, I'm replacing my LIM... My plugs are worn to ****, probably the ones that came stock on it [at 99k now, i bought it at 89k].
They're really, really worn with a huge gap.
No damage, just worn.

The coil packs, at least thats what I think they are... They think that the Plug wire goes on, then runs to the plugs, three of them are really really corroded.
I'm going to put in a new PCV while I'm at it, then probably do a fuel filter and tranny change after the LIM/plugs/wires are all done.

Fuel filters should be changed every 2 years or like 30k miles. Something to that effect. And a clogged filter, I would assume, would give you severe mileage decrease.

yea iv heard 20 thousand miles.... and this thing is defintely more than 2 years old....... it has to hurt performance too right

thats good that you got it taken care of.

OT:
so my dad asked my mechanic to change my fuel filter. he said that it doesnt affect mileage, only performance..... raise the bs flag or what?

NO. unless my car just magically got better, that statement is incorrect. I got the oil changed, plugs, wires and oil filter changed, my mileage increased to about 18 MPG. I got my fuel filter changed 2 days ago and my gas mileage is just as good as, if not better then when i got the car. maybe its just me, but im going more to the fact that the fuel filter = happy MPG.

Tune up for me tomorrow. New plugs, wires, oil, fuel filter, clean the air filter and rotate the tires.

SSRacer
03-01-2008, 07:09 PM
Well, skipped the plugs and wires (store didn't have what I wanted) but the ones in their now are still fine. Rotated the tires, changed the oil and filter, cleaned teh air fliter and the MAF, replaced the PCV valve and replaced the fuel filter (83K on it).

Who's idea was it to wedge the dang fuel filter in between the gas tank and some other box (emissions stuff I think) and above the fuel inlet from the gas cap. That was a PITA!

Seems to have some of it's pep back now :D

cardude007617
03-01-2008, 07:20 PM
so your car revs faster now that you changed all that old stuff out?

SSRacer
03-01-2008, 10:00 PM
It sure feels like it's pulling harder now.

The MAF sensors were pretty dirty, and the air filter was getting a little nasty. When I poured the fuel out of the old fuel filter, the last stuff that came out of the fuel tank side was almost black. That's probably gonna help the most.

Next up will be a new belt because mine is getting old. There was actually some rubber on the bottom of the hood.

I was gonna use the seafoam and wait on changing the oil, but I couldn't find it locally. Maybe next time around. I think the damn royal purple oil got more expensive too. I thought it used to be like $5 something a quart and now it's $7 something.

You can run seafoam through the pcv and dump a can in the gas tank, just don't put any in your crankcase.

i know for 96-98 the fuel filter not being changed on a regular basis caused my fuel pump to go out twice. if you have that many miles i deffinately woud change it out, a fuel pump is like 300 put in. the oil change place usually gives me a discount when i get the fuel filter changed since they already under the car. i get mine every other oil change just cause i dont wanna do the fuel pump for a third time

ninobrn99

ive ran seafoam, changed the plugs, fuel filter, got the LIM fixed, changed the tranny fluid and filter, oil changes and filters done regularly. Mine is still only getting 10-12mpgs. Im thinking maybe change the o2 sensors. I dont know what else it could be.
