you seem to be one of the experts on this, so I'm going to ask you personally.

I recently switched to the Castrol Syntec European blend OW-30 last December and it works great for cold starting and general winter driving. Now spring is here and I'm due for an oil change.

Would you recommend the Castrol German blend for all season? (the midwest can get pretty hot, as you might know)

Any thoughts on Royal Purple or Amsoil and is it worth the price?

What about this new Mobil 1 Advanced fuel economy blend?

I've been reading your posts about ratings, viscosities, and such and it's been helpful.
I got this PM, & thought it might be useful for others...

This is the second PM, I got about motor oils lol
(The other was on another forum, for his '05 Mustang GT. That was considering using something else than Royal Purple this summer.)

YES, I use the Castrol Syntec 0W-30 synthetic motor oil from Germany year round.
& so do others...

It is actually better suited for summer; than winter usage.
While it meets the cold crank rating for -35°C/-31°F (Castrol says it will cold crank at -40°C/F).
It is a real thick 30 viscosity oil; almost a 40 viscosity motor oil.
(viscosity @ 100°C is 12.1 cst, HTHS at 150°C is about 3.5)
ACEA A3 spec rating.

Royal Purple I don't really like...
It does not hold it's viscosity, & shears/thins out.
+ it is more expensive $$$ (at least locally here).

Amsoil synthetic (except the XL-series) motor oil is good.
But I don't like their method of marketing they use for selling it.
+ it can be more expensive here.
Note: But don't believe the hype for running it so long.

You want to use the new Mobil 1 Advanced fuel economy 0W-30 oil ?
I would say NO!!!
ACEA A1 spec = enough said lol
(viscosity @ 100°C is 11.0 cst, HTHS at 150°C is about 2.99)
Not good for summer high heats (compared to others).

Now Mobil 1 5W-30 is ok...
(viscosity @ 100°C is 11.3 cst, HTHS at 150°C is about 3.05)
But still is only rated ACEA A1 spec lol

Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance is a better choice for Mobil 1 oils.
(viscosity @ 100°C is 11.0 cst, HTHS at 150°C is about 3.10)
ACEA A5 spec rating.

If you want a thinner (for fuel economy) 5W-30 synthetic oil but it still protects in the summer heat:
Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 motor oil
(Viscosity at 100°C = 10.3 cst, HTHS at 150°C = 3.10)
ACEA A5 spec rating.

In Conclusion, & IMO:
I would use/& am using Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (from Germany) year round.
With a NAPA Gold oil filter.

If I wasn't using that, I would use:
Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, Mobil 1 5W-30 EP, or Mobil 1 5W-30

Anyone else have an opinion(s) for the OP ?

Penz Platnium is one of the best price/performance oils you can get. Patman on Bobistheoilguy is one of the experts there, I believe he did an analysis of a whole bunch of oils and now uses it in his vette aswell.

Yup.

How else do you think I found out about Castrol Syntec OW-30 ?

Yeah, he is now using Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 in his '98 C5 Corvette.
(He got bored of the Castrol Syntec 0W-30; always coming out good on his UOA's lol)

So I guess the Castrol Syntech we use here is good too. That's basically all I use.

In the US:

In (some) Auto Zone's only.

Make sure it is Castrol Syntec 0W-30; that says "Made in Germany" on the rear label.

Umm, I don't think you will see any green German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 anymore.
That was made in (about-?) '03-'05.

I used the last of my green Castrol Syntec 0W-30 in my mom's Sunfire GT last year (?).

On a sep. related topic, is mixing oils bad? So long as they're the seem viscosity if I mixed say Pennzoil and RP or whatever will it matter?

It is best not to.

The additive packages might conflict with each other.

But if, in a pinch:
Like the choice was low oil level or mixing.

I would mix.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

Did you mean additive?

Give a Porsche dealership a shot, maybe they will know where to get some.

There is rumoured to be at some Audi dealerships, Castrol Syntec 0W-30.

But buying oil through a dealership is FTL on pricing $$$.

If you can't find it AutoZone; choose another motor oil.

Congrats :woot:

What color what color :)
Or he can just read the "date code" stamp to us ;)

Pinnacle,
You aren't one of those that opens all the bottles, to check the colours are you ?
lol

Locally for me:
When Canadian Tire has 1L bottles of Castrol Syntec motor oil on sale...the 0W-30 gets sold out

Best price around here is Walmart.
Price roll backs brought it down to $6.84/1L bottle
& Part Source said they will price match it with proof.

i guess i shouls have read this thread last week. i changed to royal purple from pz platinum cuz ive heard only good things from RP. and a general rule of thumb is you get what you pay for. but i think ill try out Castrol 0-30W and see how that works.
