View Full Version : Hesitation Problem

Alright, so a couple weeks ago I was driving home from work (maybe about 5 mins of driving). I came to a stop at a red light, and when the light turned green and I started driving, my car started hesitating at around 10mph. It was like a "surging" hesitation. I took my foot off the gas and a couple seconds later it was fine the whole way home.
Then, a couple days ago, it did the same thing. This time I had been driving for a little while, and it started hesitating as I was making a left turn at a light (BAD place to have that happen). Same deal, different conditions.
PCV, Spark Plugs, Air filter are all fine, injector cleaner run through about 3-4 weeks ago, and other than that the car runs like a champ. No SES light. Now, in recent months I have had an EGR code go off, then go away a day later. Think this could be an intermittent EGR problem, or something else? My two guesses due to the info are either the EGR valve or the fuel pump (I hope not). Your thoughts?

check the spark plug wires too maybe.

throttle positions sensor? what happens when you push the gas pedal farther? EGR, no matter if it was bad or not, would not cause hesitation like that. Fuel pump usually just dies, no on/off intermitant working.

Plug wires are fine. Besides, I can't imagine it would be completely smooth and then for 2 seconds be horrible, then back to normal. This was a problem with all cylinders. I didn't get a chance to push the pedal further down until it stopped; it only did it for a couple seconds. When I did give it gas and it responded, it was in 2nd gear, which makes sense.
When my EGR went bad on my old 89 Beretta (2.8V6), it did something similar to this, but it would sometimes stall, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the EGR...especially if it's wide open at low throttle and RPMs.

My car had the extend crank problem on start up and not just cold all the time. Did for like six months and i replaced the fuel pump and no more problems. Not saying thats it but i guess kinda the same problem. My car also ran great other wise.

mines doing the same thing..my rpm needle isn't moving but the car at a red light for example feels like its going to stale.i was thinking exhaust or fuel fliter ...but who would i know for sure?...also if its lets say fuel fliter is it bad i am driving what could happen?

When's the last time you replaced your fuel filter?

i think roughly 2 years ago

You could have a vacuum leak also. Mine doesnt feel like it's going to stall though.

how do i check for that? where do i check hahah not that great when it comes to cars

See if any little coffee-straw sized hoses are disconnected, listen for a sucking sound under the hood, grab some throttle body cleaner and spray tiny bits in different spots to see if it affects the engine (dont spray near the exhaust manifold).

ok so this morning the service eng light came on and when i rev the gas sounds to me its the cat backed up ...could i be right where it feels like its going to stale at a red light? and when i press on the gas from a stop position it make a sound and has a hard time?
06-06-2008, 07:39 AM
Do or did you ever have a rattle coming from under the car? Could be the cat...
06-06-2008, 07:45 AM
yes bit of rattle and just not smooth sounding i am 98% hahah think its the cat

Go to a muffler place and get it checked/replaced. Its gonna suck up your gas and create excess wear on the engine.

i notice the gas dropping and ya when i saw the eng light come on kinda of got worried so i will be going tonight after work to have them check it out thanks again for the help and advice

if it is the cat are they going to want to change the whole exhust system?
06-06-2008, 09:24 AM
If the cat is the only problem, then they can just replace the cat.
