I bought a 1999 GA GT V6 4dr about a month ago and it seems to be pretty hard on fuel. I知 curious what other owners are getting. I知 averaging 340km to a tank, so about 211 miles to a tank. What are other GT drives getting? Thanks!!

Shawn

I get about 270-330 miles on most tanks. The more city driving, the lower it goes.

try a gerenal tune up so spark plugs and wires, fuel filter air filter, and a can of sea foam for good measure.

i have a 2001 GAGT with 243,XXX, i've been trying to keep the tach under 2K if possible, and i'm getting between 26-28 mpg per tank, which i think is pretty good for that many miles!

I got 678km out of my last tank, and I filled up before I got the light. I am actually scared to run low enough for the light to flash.

wow man! That doesnt sound right. How many cliks on your GA?
You all tuned up and cleaned up? (Air filter, fuel filter, fuel injector/system cleaning, engine flush, pcv valve) That stuff makes a huge diff.

I just turned over 100k 2 weeks ago but have done the above at 75k and will again at 120k. Still stock plugs and wires.

i get 400km for half tank on the gauge...but then i drive to work 60kms one way and on cruise control at 90-100km/hr....if i don't i get about 340kms for a half tank.

I get at least 300 miles a tank, normaly about 300-330 with mixed driving and 330-350 with all highway driving. I average 30-33mpg right now and I do get on it every now and again to burn the carbon out of it :)

I don't know if my fuel light still works I usually never get it that low.

dang people, my mileage sucks compared to yours. I do city driving, usually traffic, and I filled up last night at 227 miles and put in 11.2 gallons. that's about ~21 mpg, but then again I'm high rpm happy, with 6 gears to burn through. so considering i'm very pedal happy, I think I get great mileage, highway about ~28. some of you guys getting 30+ city sounds almost impossible.... UNLESS you have the 4 bangers.

Reading these ridiculously high numbers (compared to mine) makes me think the GA has something wrong with her. Fuel filter and plugs are just a few months old. Oil is Royal Purple changed every 4 to 5 thousand miles. Only "performance" mods are a Dr. Speed short (WAI) intake and a Borla cat-back. 87K on the car. New Yellow Top Optima battery. Need to get a new alt, the mr. alternator one is four years old and putting out crap at idle.

My wheels and tires are very slightly heavier than the factory ones, which will hurt a little on mileage, but damn, not 7 - 10 mpg.

I have run sea-foam through the PCV once and just put some in the gas tank this morning. Plan on doing the oil right before the next change and maybe doing the top end again.

keep in mind that there are several size gas tanks throughout the 5th gen grand am's years

all this info was obtained from owners manuals

1999 got a 15.0 gallon
2000 got a 14.3 gallon
2001 got a 14.3 gallon
2002 got a 14.1 gallon
2003 got a 14.1 gallon
2004 got a 14.1 gallon

got the manuals from here
Owners manual download (http://www.devicemanuals.com/guide/Automobile/Pontiac/Pontiac-Grand-Am-Owner's-Manual-2004-==TVRFd01qRXo=.html)

going through part numbers checked part numbers through gmpartsdirect.com it gives the years it will work on thats where i got these numbers from below
99 is all by itself meaning thats the only year it will work with
00-03 are different
04-05 are different too

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm going to change the plugs and wires this weekend, run a fuel system cleaner with the next tank of gas, and get a new fuel filter. I changed the air filter already. I would love to see 600km plus like stillriza. Is that with the V6 or 4cyl? Was there not a 2.4L option for the GAGT?

Thanks again

Shawn

To add to this, the BEST I have done so far, is 380 KM on 3/4's of a tank, I do not ever go below 1/4 to make sure the fuel pump will stay cool enough.

I am EXTREMELY picky with my car, for me to say I take VERY good care of it is an under statement, but yet, I cannot seem to get my mileage up. I have done everything suggested in this thread in the last 10,000 KM, and still, I have gained maybe 75KM per tank, from ALL of the suggested maintenance procedures. I drive the posted speed limit all the time, I am not a heavy footer at all.

My daily commute is mostly city, with about 5 minutes of 90KM/H freeway driving.

Anything else I should be looking at?

I average 380 - 400km (95% city driving) and I like to stand on the pedal all the time.

I have a 99 4dr GT... I get about 190 miles when the fuel gauge reads half.
I'm a slight bit below half now and have 187 on this trip.

I'm running a Pacesetter exhaust w/ Premium fuel (DHP PCM) not tuned.
I average around 26-28mpg.
and I drive like a grandma as well.

I USED to get about 16-17mpg... Then I ran seafoam through it and holy freaking crap. My mileage skyrocketed (changed the oil afterwards too)
I mean, I also did a LIM + headgasket change about 1000miles before I ran seafoam, but there was no mileage change after I did the gasket (replaced plugs/wires/pcv, etc..)

Personal best - 350 odd miles between fillup. All highway coming back to Ohio from Gatlinburg TN. Averaged 29.1mpg.

Normal - about 200 miles between fillups and usually put in 10-11 gallons at most to top her off. As far as mpg, I've seen it swing down as low an average of 14 and as high as 22 for local driving. I'm normally into it pretty hard. I enjoy driving it.

Don't forget about tires. I put a new set on and lost about 7 miles per a gallon for the first 6000 miles, then it went back to about 29.
