Dell Inspiron 15.4" Laptop featuring Intel Celeron Processor 550 (1525) (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10107579&logon=L&langid=EN)

I just ordered one, online from BestBuy.ca as a door crasher for today at $399 Cdn.
+ shipping (CanadaPost Xpresspost at $17.12 Cdn) & 13% taxes.
= $471.34 Cdn

It is out of stock & will ship when they have stock.

My needs:
Basic web surfing
storing my contacts info/calender details
WiFi
maybe tethering to my cell (3.5G HSDPA network) for net surfing.

Would you guys (& girls) say this is an ok/good buy ?

That is a good price Mike. The onboard graphics are next generation when it comes to onboard graphics. Leaps and bounds over the older intel GMA chipset. You will enjoy watching movies on it as well. I believe the chipset has HD rendering capabilites but not 100% sure. I know the new generation does though for the most part. Don't expect gaming but since that is not what your looking at this lappy will exceed your needs. The 550 Celeron is among the newer generation chips, more power effeicent and you can expecet a good 4-6 hours of battery life. I love the Wifi capabilites as well. Good range and a clean signal. Good buy over all and excellent price. Ample storage space, lots of memory and a dvd superdrive to boot!! (pun intended). :)

Don't waste your money on a Dell laptop.

If you do get it, invest in some RAM, it says it has an on board video card, it's going to use 384MB of your RAM to run your graphics card leaving you with 616MB of RAM for the rest of your computer.

way to be a total douche bag.

Ya I would say it is a good deal. I work for IT at my college and we havnt had very many problems with Dell laptops. Id prefer you bought a MacBook but im a total fan boy. That computer should work great for what you intend to do. What OS are you going to run?

It is pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic :( lol

A MacBook is too expensive $$$ (I think).
Just looking for a bare basic laptop, on the cheap.

It will fill your needs perfectly Mike. and 1gb of ram, even after the 300mbs taken for your video will still be more than enough for your intended purposes.

Get a Mac!
I have a dual boot on my laptop right now. I can choose to run Windows or OS at start up.
But I prefer OS. Do it.

if you are running vista i'd stay away from celeron, even for web browsing, but whatever suites you. daul core is way to go. stick with intel.

Dual boot?? Ahhazz. You're the geek-ette of my dreams :):teacher:

Not in Canada. Pricing is higher here for evvvvvvverything, not just cars. A similarly equipped notebook but with a dual core cpu will be +100-150 depending on the cpu and that is before taxes.

And I have a Celeron running vista at one of my customers shops running fine and they have never complained..and their PC is used for developing.

I agree a Celeron cpu a few years ago used to suk teh major ballzors..but A Celeron cpu from today is a completely new architecture. They are basically single core equivalents of the dual core cpus with less cache. Plus they have the added benefits of lower power consumption which means longer battery life.

One question, if you know anything about linux, i would go that route, it will save you tons of money. instead of getting vista, the system resource hogger

Linux looks cool as fudge.. but for the life of me I couldnt put up with it when I installed it. I felt soo stupid not knowing where anything was and how to get online.

But ya, linux is dope and it's getting better every release.

Agreed! I have 4 that can dual-boot. Newest laptop is a MacBook Pro 15" with the 2.6 Ghz C2D. (desktop is a Mac Pro 3.0 Quad, 30" Cinema display)

Also..the Acer comes with Vista home Premium..while the dell with Vista Basic.
+1 for the Acer

Also, regarding the video chipset in the acer notebook..."The X3100 display unit includes a 300 MHz RAMDAC, two 25-112 MHz LVDS transmitters, 2 DVO encoders, and a TV encoder. In addition, along with the latest drivers, the product can support DirectX 10.0 Shader Model 4.0."
