View Full Version : Gatorback belt doesn't fit?

I recently purchased the Gatorback belt from PFYC ( but when the mechanic tried to put it on today it didn't fit. (I know I could do the belt myself but I was getting my AC compressor replaced so I threw the belt/plugs and wires into the work order too.) He told me that the belt rubbed on the back of the tension arm so he put the original belt back on instead.

The belt I have is part #4060865 from Goodyear. Is this supposed to be the right size for a 2003 GT 3.4L engine? I see that PFYC says the belt measures at 86.5" but what is the stock size? They also had this note on the page but no explanation of what size would fit a 2003:

NOTE: This belt measures 86.5" in length - please double check to make sure this will fit with your car's engine before purchasing. We have recently received information that there may be variations in the required sizes among different years of Grand Ams

Also, I could attempt to return the belt but since the RMA process requires it to be returned in 10 days I highly doubt the APO system would get it there in time. I'll probably offer this belt up for sale but I'd still like to replace my stock one since I'm nearing 63,000 miles right now. It's still good, but eventually it will need replaced and I'm going to need a GOOD part number for that belt. Anyone else with a 2003 that has switched to Gatorback belts?

According to goodyear's website.

4060865 is the 1st design
4060872 is the 2nd design

both belts should fit. Same lengths. I have 4060865 and have no problems. Maybe they didn't route the belt correctly.

He told me that the belt rubbed on the back of the tension arm so he put the original belt back on instead.

Do you have the factory belt tensioner still? Or autozone. Autozone belt tension rubs the backside of the tension due to their design. Also it fits like 3 other vehicles from the autozone tensioner. While the factory tensioner only fits our 3.4L engine motors. That might be your problem. Go get a factory tensioner and the rubbing problem will be solved.

As lvemy3100 posted, the Gatorback 4060872 is the correct length for '03 to '05 3400 engines. I had the same problem with the 4060865 on my '05 GAGT, but the 4060872 fits fine. And the belts ARE different lengths - thus the difference between 4060"865" and 4060"872" .

Was probably the change when they went from the Delphi to the Bosch? alternator.

Awesome. Thanks for the info guys. I'll be ordering the 872 belt now and offering the 865 up in the for sale section after I talk to PFYC to see if they can swap them out for me. I'm guessing that's a no-go though...

FYI, I do have the stock tension arm so my problem appears to be the 99-02 and 03-05 difference. I wonder if PFYC knows the difference yet...

Wow, talk about awesome service. They've already updated the website to reflect the information in this thread. Great work! One of the reasons I have PFYC bookmarked.
:applause: about adjusting that policy on shipment to APO addresses? :heh:

so the 865 are for 99-02?

That appears to be the case. As it was mentioned above, the change in 2003 to the new alternator appears to have added .7 inches.

Focked up way to learn about the different, but nice catch Furious. This'll help everyone else out.

yes I learned about the diff the hard way, changed the belt then about a week later i started hearing a wom wom wom sound at idle, found I put the wrong "shorter" belt on, ended up f%$in up my tensioner pully and had to get another belt, got my money back for the first belt tho as the guy at canadian tire gave me the wrong one

Yeah, I'm annoyed that I have to take time later to put the new one on that I ordered last night from Summit Racing. (PFYC doesn't carry the 872 or I'd still go through them.) Other than that, PFYC had great customer service and I've sent the wrong belt back today.

Hopefully the next person who is looking for a belt will find this thread and learn about the difference before ordering. It helps that PFYC has already updated their site to alert customers to the difference.

All in all, it could have been worse. I'm happy in the end and I have a lot more trust in PFYC than I did before this happened.

I bought one from Autozone earlier this year. Don't know what part number it was, but it fit just fine.
