So Today i purchased another grand am. Its a 1999 Grand Am SE with the 2.4L engine. The car is in imaculate condition inside and out and only has 139, 600kms on it. I only paid 600.00 Canadian for the car. The only this is the engine knocks real hard. Therefore im sure the repair would cost far to much or take way to much time. I am going to replace the engine so i have a couple questions.

1. Will the 2.4L engine out of a z24 cavalier work for the grand am?

2. How hard would it be to swap the 2.4L with a 3.4L engine?

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

well from what i know will the 96 GA with the 2.4L it wont work to put the Zs motor in it, now it may be different in the newer year GA but im not sure.

yours probably has the same thing mine has, it spun a bearing out of no reason, so im replacing the whole motor too. i cant tell you by what i found out today, they dont sell a full rebuild kit in like autozone and/or advanced auto. but i dont know i havent checked anywhere else.

its not to hard to pull these motor either, im takin my completey apart, to pain stuff for the newt motor, like im painting ALOT of shet so that the new motor will look amazing.

yeah i think mines a bearing aswel not positive however. the reason i ask about the 2.4 out of the cavy is because the engine looks the same and there are alot more engines from those cars available to me then there are from grand ams.

it depends on the year of the z24.

i dont think the 3400 swap would be too tricky since they installed them both in the same car at the factory. i THINK youd just have to swap pcm's but i really dont know.

for more 2.4 info check out www.quad4forums.com , www.j-body.org , or PM spyhunter.

Does anyone know what other modifiactions would be needed as far as the 3.4L engine swap? like will i need a new harnass for the pcm or will it have all the sensors i need and will the motor mounts be the same?

and would the transmission bolt pattern be the same?

the front subframe might have to be swapped seeing as how the motor mounts are different

yeah.. i think i might just grab another 2.4L and beef it up with a supercharger... gm makes a supercharger that bolts right on for these engines

Its the 2.2 liter ecotec motor GM used in GA's in 02-05

if you're gonna put a 4 cyl back in. I vote for the LSJ (2.0 ecotec) or LN5 (2.4 ecotec). i'd actually rather have either of those than the 3.4 v6 :/

would i have to do any modifications to throw any of those specific engines in like will the harness be the same?

i dont remember threads of anyone doing the swap recently. id just drop in a new 2.4 and get the GM S/C. its the easiest way to go.

you can get an LSJ from a cobalt SS or ion redline. the LN5 from a cobalt or redline. noone has done one of those swaps yet so it would be kind of uncharted territory.

a 2.2L will bolt up to that chassis as far as i know although you may want to double check with someone. try www.ecotecforum.com very knowledgeable guys the 2.0L LSJ (SCharged) 2.0L LNF (Turbo) have the same mounts as a 2.2Ecotec (L61)

though i have no clue how you would work aroudn the PCM. Ive yet to figure that one out.

If you go with the L61 however, you can pick up the SC kit off of GM for something like $2500 which comes with a PCM reflash.

The PCM re-flash is only for the cavalier and sunfire unfortunately. Unlike the 2.4 where they also supported the GA and Alero.

had no idea...

regardless there are many turning options out there. and its not a bad thing to know.

ok thanks guys. yeah i probably will end up jsut throwing another 2.4L engine in as i have found one at an insurance auction. one more question howevedr does anyone know if the transmissions are the same in the 2.4L as the 3.4 like the bolt pattern. i havent taken the engine out of either of mine yet,,

I would find a Getreg F23 to bolt up to that 2.4. Get a nice Spec clutch and you are golden. (If you like driving a 5 speed).

The SC for a 99 will require more mods then the factory kit provides. You should do a little research to find out if you want to do the extra work.

im a 2.4L out of a 2000 grand am engine in the car hopefully

does anyone know if the transmission has the same bolt pattern in a 2.4 as the 3.4?

so i am doing soem research and apparently when i swap the engine i have to get and engine out of a grand am either early 2000's or older because of the 2.4L transition. i was just curious if anyone knew how early of 2000 i could take an engine out of that would work or if i were to take an engine out of a newer one which modifications would have to be made?

No, the 3400 and 2.4 do not share a bolt pattern.

You *may* be able to use a newer 2.4 in your car. The 99s were kind of transitional. Does your existing 2.4 have EGR?

I don't see why a 2.4 out of any 99-01 GA would not work. To me to do a 2.2 eco swap you will need the complete sub frame out of a GA or alero. And the complete engine harness. Same with the 3400.

yes my current engine does have an egr valve

Then you're kinda stuck with a '96-'99 (with EGR) engine unless you want to modify stuff.
