hello i was wondering if anybody knows what makes the numbers and everything light up red on the instrument cluster. is it just a film or something on the back of the gauge cover?

Wow, didn't know they offered other colors like that.
YIKES almost $200 to change the cluster, hvac, fog and shifter overlays

lol. That's what I was thinking too last night. They look good and I would love to do it, but it is a bit much. IDK...

Yeah, not having red lighting anymore would be sweet, but $200 is $200

I was thinking about changing the bulbs behind the faces. That would be cheaper..

Wouldn't it still look red because of the tinting on the stock overlays?

Yeah, might not be a bad idea. Maybe I'll go get a cluster from a yard and play with it.
I hate overlays though, because the needles get caught up sometimes

IIRC, the stock speedo face has alot of adhesive on the back of it. Get some clear stuff, throw it on the back of the face, a little spray adhesive on that, and voila.. No needles sticking on the front side.

And then pray your new cluster fits correctly lol

Ehh. It should. You're not adding alot of layers behind it.

I know, I just like coming up with reasons I don't want to spend the money on it

yeah well i was thinking of just taking off the stock gauge overlay and taking off whatever tint is on the back. has anybody taken a look at this is it just a red film or something that can be scraped off?

Not sure, I'll be at the junkyard soon, so I can investigate.

awesome. well i already got the white reverse glow overlay but idk the white isnt really a good match with the rest of the dash. another question. when i removed the needles, i noticed that it was only painted on the bottom of the needle. so what would i do if i wanted to paint them a differnt color? i really want blue needles. i know i would have to sandpaper the orange paint off then what kind of paint would i use to put new paint on? or would it be easier to sand off the orange and leave the needle clear and just change the color of the light bulb?
dont bother going through CAA. last time people around here tried contacting them they couldnt get ahold of them.
apparently, on the back of the gauges is like a fading film so it will need to be scratched off. there was a thread with someone said they did this successfully but never posted pics. someone just needs to try it and see how it goes.
as far as the bulbs, iirc, i do believe the main ones you can just switch out. but if you want to change them to LEDS search the member strmurphy. he did it all.
ive wanted to do this mod forever. ive always wanted white lights but with the issues with CAA plus my laziness it never happened. hopefully someone comes through!
Link to all the threads he made, including the one with all the info to change the gauge color.

search links only work for the one who does the search unfortunately. ;crap

so the main bulbs are just 194 bulbs right with the plastic bottom part attached? where would i buy replacement ones that are blue? and what about the needles? what kind of paint would i use on them?
i think you could pick up some blue bulbs from any autozone. you can get LED's with the correct base from www.superbrightleds.com.
if you search around for needles some people have modded them. i believe if you just scrape off the yellow paint it will make the needles glow white even with the red lights. so, in theory, you could scrape off the paint and it should glow bluish after the mods.

I have a cluster torn apart right now next to me, and trust me, replacing ALL the LEDs will not be fun. The stock face is tinted red, so in order to change the color, you would need to change the actual face. Changing just the bulbs will lead to.... nothing, really. A dark red glow. lol

is it possible to scratch the tinting off at all?

Yeah. The damn back of the face is coated in glue
that looks like it might disperse the light better? so its not bright at the bulbs and not elsewhere.

There is that, and some white film right where the bulbs shine from the back to disperse the light
i wonder how the aftermarket gauges that glow blue make it happen. youd think they would make it glow purple or whatever since you just cover the stock gauge.

A lot of them have an external power source that lights them up and blocks out the old light

ooo. i never did that mod. looks like we might be out of luck if we want any color besides red or blue.
