guys,
i am wanting to get my windows tinted, but i don't know what percent to get or having anything to compare against. if anyone has some pics of white (or whatever color) ga's with tint and if you could specify the % you have, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Josh

I have a silver GT coupe with 5% tint (limo) on the back window and side quarter windows. Thats legal. Whats not legal is the 30% tint I have on my doors. The guy at the tint shop told me its technically illegal to tint your front-side windows at all. But, everybody does it and I've never had any problems. Just check your local laws and get them as dark as you can stand to have them.

I have a 4 dr Green Ga and have 5% on the rear window and rear door windows and had 30% on the drivers side until I had to have it removed. (Cop with nothing better to do except get excited because my window was tinted...power thing I guess)

I can tell you the 5% tint on the rear makes it real hard to see backing up at night time. In fact sometimes I can't see a thing backing up and looking through the rear window. Maybe its my eyes going bad as I get older but I don't think so.

i have a 99ga se 4dr and i tinted all my back windows 5% and my two front windows 20%, it looks so sweet, and hella dark, getting darker on the back makes it really hard to see in at night, sometimes i cant see in at all, and it really is VERY hard to see at night backing up, i almost backed into a car the other day, hehe, but it looks kewl, thats all that matters right?

I have 35% on the back three and 50% on the front two with a 15% windshield strip. It's dark enough to make the car look really nice, but not so dark that you can't see out. I have a dark interior too, so the back is dark enough that you can't really see in.

In contrast to what someone else said before, I'd say go as light as you can. Makes the car look nicer, but you also don't stick out like a sore thumb to all those damn cops.....man cops suck!

Check the www at the bottom or the cardomain thing...

I have 5% all the way around and a 5% eyebrow, i plan on tinting my windshield sometime soon but not yet, heres a pic of my windows. it's not that good of one but it'll give you an idea. but my suggestion is to go as dark as you can bc i just think black windows on a white car look bad ass.

They do, I have tints on my white, just below whats legal around here... It's hard to see in, you pretty much can only see through it when your up close... Also I don't know the %, came with the car when I bought it... I'll wash her up soon, maybe tomorrow and take some pictures... I never really got around to doing that before cause she looks pretty much stock from the outside...

I have 20% all the way around and it looks sweet. I also have a 6 inch sunvisor at 20%. You can't see in it much, but I can see out fine.

I've got limo tint on my 3 rear windows. I did not get the sides done as too much hassle around here with cops and RCMP. I can't believe how much a difference tint makes. I think all GA's should come from the factory that way .

If you are planning to get the back window tinted completely, make sure the company doing the job is well known and will do a good job. I know some people on here that has had no problem with the people that tinted the matrix pattern, but from my personal experience, I went to a company that I thought was good and now my back window looks awful and they will not refund me or redo it. Anyway, just a word of caution.

OK, I've been sellin' tint for years....

Legal here is 5% behind the driver, 35% on the front rollups. Not that they enforce it in Vegas, but that's the law. In CA, you can have 5% behind the driver, but NO TINT on the rollups at all, in some counties there a re ordinances specifying that the back window must be clear as well.

5% is VERY DARK, that's limo, some companies make 2%, but not only is this RIDICULOUSLY dark, it also tends to fade rather quickly for some reason. 20% is a nice medium shade, most factory "privacy glass" is between 20 and 25 percent, so if you want to know what it looks like, lok at the back of most new SUV's.

35% is quite light, makes the window look smoked but you can still see through it.

45 and 50 percent is damn near clear, 45% is a VERY light smoke effect.

The % refers to the amount of visible light that passes through the film, so the lower the %, the darker the tint.

Look for Lumar, Solar Gard, or Madico films, they are very good. Quality film is a factor of a couple things. Metal content is one - the higher the content of titanium or aluminum, the less dye, the more resistant to fading. The way the fil shrinks is another factor, many cheap films get blurry or "ghost" when they have to shrink a lot. this isn't a problem on old cars with flat windows, but our rear glass is VERY curved, and requires a good deal of shrinking. Lastly, the adhesive. Cheap film will bubble or peel as it ages, good film will not. Some films (3M is infamous for it) the adhesive eventually causes the film to become blurry, almost opaque - it sucks. I recomend avoiding 3M, SunTek, Johnson, and others, find a place that uses one of the three I mentioned earlier.

Finally, here is a thread with pic's of both mine and SpyhunteR's cars at the track. Spy has 20% all around, I have 5% all around with 35% on the whole windsheild. As for seeing - you adjust. If you've never had tint before, I wouldn't run off and do full limo. It's basicly like driving with your sunglasses on at night. The 35% on the windsheild is GREAT - inside looking out, you can barely tell it's there, but outside lookin' in, there is very little light coming through the other dark windows, so the windsheild looks dark as hell. It's beautiful, and keeps the car COOL. It's also VERY illegal in EVERY state, so unless you know the cops (I do here) or live in an area where they don't care (I have that, too) you probably don't want to risk it.

Crap, can't link it. If you're a member on GAOC, there's a thread called "Race night - I'm SOOOO happy!" in the racing forum. SC/T GrandAm took a couple pic's on his visit here, they're great. You can clearly see both of our tint jods from several angles, and both of our cars are white. There's a really good shot of me lining up with a Supra where you can see the windsheild effect, and one of Spy lining up with a Civic where you see without windsheild tint. Finally there is a side shot of us lined up, you can see the two tints quite well, although in the dark his 20% looks almost as dark as my 5%. It's worth the look, I promise!

As for the matrix issue, it's hit or miss. There are steps to take to mke it better, but once the film is laid up, it's luck, period. I've seen some tinters use a Gluestik to force it up, but this looks like crap in a few months when that stuff cracks. It either sticks to the dots or it doesn't, not much you can do. Mine came out pretty good but there is an area to the sides of the 3rd brake light (top of rear glass in a '98) where it's less that perfect. At least it's symetrical.

Thanx for the links, you da' man! Too bad the cars look so small, but the tint is still obvious enough.... lol

BTW - on the stereo pic's, that pink one wasn't ours. it was done at another local shop that is now out of business. Still a great pic, though! ;)
