Alright, got my 1999 Grand Am GT up and running, just one quick question. When I start it up it heats up to 230degrees stays there for a minute and then rapidly goes back down, what exactly is going on? I turned my heat on in the car and it caused it to go back down. Do I need a new thermostat, fan switch...?

sounds like a sticking thermostat...do the cooling fans work?..because im pretty sure the high speed fan comes on at about 230 degrees...maybe the low speed fan is bad?..

what do I need to do to determine if it is the low speed fan?

did you turn on your front heat, or defrosters. if you turned on your defroster, then it turns on your ac compressor, which will turn on your high speed fan. you could have a fan issue, stuck thermostat, or air in the sys.

i turned on the heat, aimed down towards my legs. What would cause air in the system and how could I get it out. Also how hard is it to change the thermostat in these cars?

Also would it be safe to take this car on 5 minute trips to work until I could get the thermostat changed if I keep the heat on?
Mine would do that except go much higher... overheating to the red typically.
But one it reached there if you hit the gas pretty heavy while it's in N or D w/ foot on brake... rev it a few times really quick, it would shoot down pretty rapidly.
Turned out to be head gaskets leaking, and no compression on 2 cyls.
edit; 230 isnt really overheating at all.
its still within the norm.
