Mobil 1 5W-30 IMO has gone downhill since: Motor Oils Post-Katrina Hurricane (http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57646)

Know nothing about it. All I've noticed is at my local auto parts store, mobil1 5w-30 is getting hard to find. They've been out of the 1 gal bottles for weeks and their supply of 1qt bottles is getting low.

I've been thinking about possibly changing oil brand and/or weight for a while, but I don't know what any of those ratings mean and I don't have time to do a whole day of reading to find out.

yea, its starting to pick back up. but those hurricanes or tropical storms or whatever they were that came through last summer KILLED the mobile plants down south. thats why the mobile one is on such short order. whatever is on the shelves is what companies has stocked up. I know where i work we only get one or two cases of oil a week for it. We did FINALLY get some gallons though last thursday ( our oil day). so maybe we will get lucky and it will become available again!! i know im almost due for a change.

Mike, why dont you just make a rating list for the most common oils so it can be stickied.. would be a great way to keep people up to date with what oil is best for them

I wouldn't feel qualified to do that.

Some of it is IMO.

Some of it is from what I hear/read.

& some depend on what it is used for.

As not all engines handle oils the same.

Well I guess the big thing is we don't know what all those numbers mean, as in what do they mean for that oil and how do they make it different from any other oil. If you don't know that, you can't determine what the quality is or how the oil will react in your engine. In other words you can't tell which oil is best for your needs. Is there a site that explains this stuff? (hopefully in simple terms)

btw, I saw the commercial for the castrol edge oil during the superbowl.
