I received a "cold call" email today from a local GM dealer.

$6500.00 Cash Credit!

OR

0% Finance for as much as 72 months!

AND

A Maintenance Package for 36 months/60,000 km!

PLUS a two (2) year subscription of OnStar

with Directions and Connections!

PLUS a two (2) year subscription for

XM Satellite Radio!

OR

$1000.00 Cash Alternative!
What do people think ?

I am not really in the car market just yet.
With "deals" like this, it is so tempting !

I was originally thinking the earliest would be summer of '10.
But the way the economy & the stock market is...was thinking of delaying (unless a deal came along).

GM Canada says right now: Cash Purchase Price for a Pontiac G8 GT is
from $28,898 (From $37,450 MSRP)

I really want a Pontiac G8 GXP though.
When will GM Canada announce the pricing up here ?!

Should I get a car this year/summer; or wait until next year ?
Would you buy one now; being a first year run ?

PS: If I cash in some investments...I will take a 33% hit/lost on it.
I do have access to funds (credit) to pay "cash" too.
or
Take them up on their "0% Finance for as much as 72 months!"; but lose the cash pricing discount incentive.

Not a consideration...

When I plan to own it over a long term period.

Just look at my GA, I had it since June '98.

I think its a good deal. Its not really a true "first year", since the car pretty much existed in Australia already and has just been tweaked.

Plus, I want to see what tires you put on it lol

I agree with Rich. You'll wish you had opted for the GXP considering any GXP is so rare in Toronto anyways, you'll def stand out.

GXP isn't visibly much different than GT, and I've heard from lots of people that the GT is plenty of juice. Besides, use the money for a S/C or headers/cam lol

Sounds like a Good Deal, If you Truly want a GXP then Wait it out. If you can "get by" with a G8 GT i would say go For it. I would say take the 0% for 72. That's at least 6k in savings right there.

It is very tempting with some of the deal's right now. I was looking just to find a Bargain, until my company said we have 6 more Weeks. So needless to say that ended.

I doubt Mike would get the GXP new, because those things will depreciate by about 15grand as soon as he drives it off the lot. That's a car you buy used in a recessed economy.

NSA you forget, not everyone is a car whore like you and slo, some of us hold onto vehicles for longer than a few months..some maybe hold onto them for 5+ years. I know, it's weird hearing that, but it does happen..

Who cares about depreciation anymore? All cars have huge depreciation once you drive them off the lot. As long as its a car you like then its worth more to you than anyone else. My grand am was $23,000 in 2004. And I am sure you all can guess what is worth now. Thats the risk you take when buying a car. I would still hold out for the gxp.

I would NOT drive that car in the winter time without winter tires.

According to GM Canada:
You can get optional 19" wheels with summer tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE050A).

I would probably keep the tires that come on it; & let them burn/wear out naturally. Then replace them.

& for winter tires, get maybe:

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (http://www.nokiantires.com/tyre?id=11949&group=1.01&name=Nokian+Hakkapeliitta+R)

Cars up here don't seem to depreciate as much on the used market in the Toronto area.

Plus buying used losses any cash incentives, like $7500 Cdn or promotional financing rates, like 0% over 72 months.

I got this reply back.
...There are no plans to bring the GXP to Canada…and from what we’ve been told, the GXP badge may soon be disappearing from the landscape…GT seems to have a stronger recognition factor and appeal

This current program and promotion is a pre-season kick-starter, much like the support that convertibles receive in the off season…the cash credit of $6500.00 was recently increased and will drop back down again once we are past this winter freeze…probably mid April if previous seasons and patterns are any indication.

When you would like to take a G8 out for a road test, I’ll be happy to accommodate you…
:(

What to do ?

Do I wait it out, & hope the GXP is brought into Canada later ?

I am going to email GM Canada; & see what they say.

I found this Google'ing...

GXP's on Hold for Canada (http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10947)

Yup! It's definitely a possibility to consider. PITA with paperwork, customs etc. Have to buy in a state where there is no sales tax on vehicles, since upon importation into Canada, 5% Federal GST + 8% Ontario provincial sales tax would have to be paid.
As well, current exchange rate

I believe that as the G8s are not made in a NAFTA country you would also pay 6% import duty.

So :Base price say $42,000/0.80 cdn $ conversion + GST 5% + Duty 6% + $1,000 (get it home) + $150 (RIV fee) + certification costs = approx $60,000 cdn.

ehhhh I tend to disagree. The GTO was terribly marketed, only had two doors, and wasn't replacing anything. The G8 is replacing the Grand Prix, which has a strong following. Also, the GTO was only available with a V8 and intended to be a sports car, not a sporty sedan. Same market as 5 series buyers.

You do have some good points my friend.... however, unless G8 sales start climbing soon, they're going to be a pretty rare car. Plus, I don't think many people that had a GP in the last 10 years want to ever buy another Pontiac lol

true, i work for a pontiac dealer and have already seen some semi modded G8s in for service.
what i meant was, its not going to be a high volume seller like the GP has been the past 15 years. a "special" RWD sports sedan doesnt enthuse many. even if it is truely a great driving car and just as great looking.

Interestingly, Grand Prix and Impala owners are generally a very loyal bunch. It's hard to find a low mile GP or Impala go through auction, which means people are keeping them forever. That 3800 powerplant is damn near indestructible if you maintain it.

I went for a test drive 10:15am this morning on a '09 Pontiac G8 GT.

Got some rough #'s.

Liked the rough #'s

Found out that taking the cash price is better than financing through GMAC at 0% for 72-months.

So I could get the cash pricing discount, I will be financing it not through GMAC.

The dealer could get me variable car loan 5.49% for 72-months, from TD Bank

Then went to my bank (TD Bank), & got pre-approved for a 72-month loan at a variable rate of (Prime + 2.75%) 5.25%.

Then went to my unsecured Visa/Line of Credit issuing bank to see if they can do better.
They are looking into extending my Visa/Line of Credit to cover the car purchase price at (Prime + 2.0%) 4.50%.

Found out American Express Canada does not do anymore, new Line of Credits or do any increases to existing accounts.
Damn, I like their rate of (Prime + 1.75%) 4.25% on my existing Line of Credit with them.

Went back to the dealer to get my Mom's '98 Sunfire GT appraised for trade-in.

Ended up placing down a deposit to order a new car :D
Gave them the maximum they would accept via my American Express credit card (I love my annual 1% cash rebate ;) ).

So now I have on order, for them to source me a...
(I didn't want a 2009 model, I wanted the newer 2009.5 that was assembled after Novemeber 2008.
That has Bluetooth added into their OnStar/stereo system.

Didn't get home until 7pm.

Damn, I was hungry.
I didn't eat anything all day lol

:woot::D

So now for the #'s:
I got the G8 GT with the 1SD package MRSP at $40,895 Cdn + $1,350 Cdn freight + $399 Cdn Dealer fee + $100 Cdn Federal Air-Conditioning Tax + $75 Cdn Environmnt Tax + $40 Cdn for gasoline (they fill only put in $40 worth of gasoline to get you off the dealer's lot) + $10 Cdn Licence Fee = so basically $42,869 Cdn

With my dealer add on options, it brought it up to almost $44.5K before 8% PST & 5% GST (taxes).
(They tried to sneak in dealer added window etching too.)

Ended it up with the deal:
$33,900 Cdn + freight + fees before taxes.
$35,824 Cdn before 8% PST & 5% GST (taxes)

So it was about $8676 Cdn off.

Got $800 Cdn trade-in for my Mom's '98 Sunfire GT with 128.1K km / 79.6K miles on it.

Getting my brother to sell/trade me $1500 Cdn GM points for $750 Cdn.

How did I make out ?

PS: For comparison $35,824 Cdn is about $28.2K US.

PSS: My Mom is getting my GA :)

The business manager said that since I was being so fuzzy about my colours & options: It might have to be ordered from Australia lol
I doubt it, the Canadian 2009.5 probably haven't made it through the US port to Canada yet.
Some US dealers got them already with the GXP's.

I really don't mind.
As I am getting the 19" wheels packaged with summer tires.
& if the incentives/rebates get better, the dealer will re-work the #'s for me.
So later is better for me :)

While we were waiting for the Sunfire GT to get appraised for trade-in...
The salesperson got the G8 GT with 1SC package that I test drove, for my Mom to see from the basement garage area.

We are waiting in the parking lot area for it to come out.

Out comes a silver Cadillac CTS-V.

My Mom goes, 'YOU'RE BUYING THAT !!!'

No, Mom. 'I am not buying a V-series' lol

& then she sees the G8 GT: again, 'You're buying that !!!'
'Are you sure ?'
'How are you going to drive through the snow (to get to work) with that ?'

So get this...

I got a phone call from the bank that handles my Visa/Line-of-Credit account that I was going to use to finance the car's purchase fully, with $0 down.

They wouldn't extend me my credit limit to cover the whole cost of the car.
She said, 'do you have other Line-of-Credits (& credit cards) ?'
Because you seem to already have alot of available credit out there.
I said yes, but they all have no balances; & I like your Prime + 2.0% (variable) rate.

She was only able to get 3/4 of the amount needed if I were to leave $0 down.
So I will have to use my other Line-of-Credit for the other 1/4, at Prime+1.75% (variable) rate.

Now this is the best part:
Do I need to register a lien on the title of my new car ?
No, we are just going to extend your available limit on your Line-of-Credit/Visa card account for whatever you want to use it for.

So basically, they the bank trust me to finance my new car with their unsecured Line-of-Credit/Visa card account.
My new car will be lien free (& registered to me).
& my word is good enough for them, that I will make the payments on the unsecured Line-of-Credit Visa account :)

PS: Never thought I could basically buy my new car using Visa & Amex lol

so, cliffs = still getting a G8?
Yes, I am still getting a G8 GT.

My deposit has been made already to the dealer.

It is now up to that dealer to find me one, 2009.5 with the options I want; or worst case: to order me one.

Cliff Notes:
I was trying to get the bank to provide me an auto loan.
They decided instead to put it through my unsecured credit card/Line-of-Credit account.
But won't approve a limit of $40K on it.
I was just hoping to finance the purchase with one method; vs now have to use 2-methods.

Who would of thought a bank would not want security on it as an auto loan.
They are treating it as my unsecured Line-of-Credit Visa card account transaction.

So I am basically buying my car with a Visa & Amex account.

Once they find me a car...

No, the dealer is to get it done/outsourced the add on's, before I take delivery.
It is priced into my buying price.

ie: Rear bumper back-up sensors
35% front doors tint & limo tint on the rear doors/window
Ventvisors window rainguards
3M clear bra on: front bumper, headlights, foglights, front edge of hood, front edge of front fenders, side mirrors, & door handles

Congrats! 28k Sounds about right. I'm surprised they let you use Credit Card for the entire Car. They won't let you do it in the State's at least I couldn't..
No, they didn't let me put more than $3K down as a deposit on a credit card; in my case Amex.

I have a Visa card account that is a Line-of-Credit.
So I have to go to the bank with my Visa card, & get a Bank Draft (putting the cash advance amount on my Visa account) made payable to the dealer.

& I have an Amex Line-of-Credit backing up me on my Amex credit card account(s), or to be transferred into my bank's chequing account.
So I have to do a eletronic bank transfer of funds from that Amex Line-of-Credit to my chequing account.
Then go to my bank to make a Bank Draft made payable to the dealer; taking the money out of my chequing account.

Cliff Notes:
Dealer will not take the whole payment by credit card.
(So they don't lose out on processing fees paid by them as merchant.)
Just up to $3K as a deposit on credit cards.
& then you bring in "certified" payment(s) on pick-up (delivery) of your car.

So, basically I use my Visa & Amex Line-of-Credits to generate 2-Bank Drafts to pay for it.
Then do monthly payments to my Visa & Amex account.

So, as far as the dealer is concerned: I paid $3K by Amex & the rest by 'cash'.

& my title is registered to me; with no lien(s) on it.

There no 2009.5 G8's coming into Canada.
GM Canada is not ordering anymore G8's this year.

& there are no more 2009 G8 GT with the 1SD package in Panther Black Metallic in Canada :(

I heard there are no 2009 G8 GT's with the 1SD package in Ontario !!!

There are only, in Canada for the 1SD package:
White Hot
Sport Red Metallic
Liquid Red
& 1 Magnetic Grey Metallic

So I had the dealer try to tag me the 2009 G8 GT with 1SD package in Magnetic Grey Metallic.
I get confirmation tomorrow.

I think I will be going down to a 225/55/17" for a winter set of tires/wheels though.

(This time they actually have/found a car tagged for me lol :()

So they reduced the price by $710 (the MSRP price difference of the Sports package 1SD package vs the Premium with Sunroof 1SC package.)
& they reduced the price by $500, for my troubles.

I also am having them look into tomorrow, about switching the 245/45/18" all-season Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires for summer Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires.

888 is the luckiest combination of numbers in Chinese numerology , it is regarded as symbol of furtune and prosperty for thousand of years,
The roots of of this mystic belive are from the old chinese culture who beliveve that words that sounds the same as numbers bear the meaning of the word 8- sounds as the word that meant sudden fortune in chinese as opposite the number 4 sounds as death and so it unlucky number and many buildings in china dont have 4th flour!
the Olympic games in Beijing will be conducted on 2008.08.08 a date that form the combination 888.
all telephone, mobile apartments in china the include the mubers 8, 888 are very popular in china and sold in high pricess.

I know...it even threw me looking at it lol

Yes, it is hell fun driving; but getting an average of 15L per 100 km (15.6 mpg) is getting old.
(There is traffic everywhere, driving to/from work.)

The gas pedal is not connected via a cable.
But by drive by wire design, & the throttle responds is a little too aggressive driving in traffic.
Had to get use to feathering it, & following not too closely.

...IDK about the tails. You looking to throw tintz on them?
Yeah, I don't really like the tail lights either.
Not going to tint it; for safety reasons.
I even had the 3rd LED brake light cut out on the tint.

Some others have swapped out the GT tail lights for the base G8 sedan version tail lights.

Congrats on the car...i test drove a gt and gxp last week and i liked them both but im leaning more towards the gxp... any problems/dislikes with the gt yet?
I love my G8 GT (in absent of any GXP's in Canada).
It is big & it is fast.

But my average over the month in gasoline mileage is about 14.6L per 100 km (16 mpg); traffic sucks here.

The ground clearance is a b*tch.
The front bumper has only just over 6".
But the plastic air dam underneath only has 4"

The rear view vision sucks for parking backing in (+ I got 5% tint on the rear windows lol).
I like to park backing in all the time.
So I got an aftermarket 4-sensor back-up kit on my rear bumper. It helps big time.

They did cheapened out on some things bring over the cars.

Like the paint job.
Owners on the G8 Board forum complain of it chipping easily.
So get a 3M Clear Bra on the front of it.

No spare tires on the GT or GXP.
& no run flat tires either.
They just give you a air pump & tire sealant.
For the GT you can order from Australia a 17" space saver spare & jack kit for $299 US (I received mine before I took delivery of my car lol).
Note: The G8 sedan V6 spare tire is not the same; & won't clear the front GT brakes. The GT spare tire is not available in the US.
I got mine from: http://www.jhp.com.au/g8partsdirect/CurrentSpecials.htm

On the GXP: You need (IIRC) to get a full size 19" spare tire to clear the front Brembo brakes.

The trunk has plenty of room for a full size spare.
It was designed to hold a full size spare tire in the spare tire compartment of the trunk.

The only problem that I have had my car into the dealership was for:
The front passenger door was rubbing on the fender quarter panel.
The had to move/re-align the fender quater panel forward more, & touch up the paint chips.

PS: If you get a GT (& it isn't a 2009.5 version): make sure the ECM & TCM (yes, the transmission has it's own computer) has the lastest update done to it.

PSS: I love my G8 GT.
& am glad I got one of the last '09 G8 GT's in Canada, while I could (there were no boat shipments this year to Canada with the 2009.5 version GT's or GXP's)

Other oddities of the car:
You need to lock the car with the remote (or use the key in the driver's door key slot, which is the only key slot on the outside of the car).
You cannot lock all the doors using the lock button inside, for when you leave.
It is an "idiot" lock out feature.

The gasoline door locks with the doors.
So make sure your doors are unlocked when gas'ing up (this isn't mentioned in the manual).

The GXP manual tranny has the 1 to 4 skip shift 'feature'; which I am sure you would eliminate.

All muscle cars, classics, exotics, sports and performance cars are welcome...

I usually cruise in the back of the Corvettes.
But when it comes to parking, the organizer likes for me to park in the front (?).
