is there a screw in the shift knob to remove it or is it any more dificult to remove than that?

Well if your talking about an auto its not even a screw. Its a little pin that holds it. just remove the pin and thats it!

pull down the leather cover of the shifter, turn your car on apply ur E break and shift your shifter all the way to the last one cut the car off and the the back side closer to the dash theres a square pin use a good knife or flat tip screw driver pull it all out its gona open up like a staple . then u can pull up he shifter. repeat steps in reverse to apply back

thanks guys... outright stupid of me not to tell you that it was a 2000 GT with an auto tranny..
