View Full Version : Infrequent Fast Idle

01 Coupe - 57k miles. After starting (either hot or cold) the idle sometimes will race as high as 3000rpm. Other times it is in the 2000 range. Never appears to step down. If i shut the engine off and restart - the problem is resolved and idle is normal. Serice Engine light was on for a day and has not reappeared. The idle problem was before and after the light. Becoming more frequent. Thoughts....

JUST fixed this problem. Would sometimes race as high as 3k on startup hot or cold weather, but never when the motor was hot. I changed the Idle Air Control motor and all was good. 50 or so dollar part, 10 mins to change. Its on the throttle body and easy as pie to get to.
Be sure you clean the seat too though. Spray carb cleaner and shove your finger down there with a towel. Dont worry about breaking anything, its all just aluminum. Or if your fingers are to big, use a q-tip. Just be sure to clean it.

Okay - $62 later and 15 minutes the problem is less frequent but still exists. Now what....mass air sensor?

have you scaned for a trouble code when the light was on?
if so what was the code

mine came back as well, less frequent as you said. My only other guess is the AIT. i have no vacume leaks and the throttle plate cant be getting stuck. its snug as a bug on the rod, not to mention clean.

AIT - not familiar with that acronym.

Air Inlet Temperature sensor

correct ( however i learned it air intake temp, same difference though). My only thought behind that was cause i "cleaned" it with my MAF cleaner and it ran kinda crappy for a few seconds. With a choppy but high idle.
Today my high idle start was accompanied with HIGH shift points. and i mean HIGH. 4k on normal acceleration. However, that stopped after i cruised at speed for awhile. One time it had done this and i could mash it to the floor and it wouldnt downshift and BARELY even sped up. Could the problems be linked?

A code reader is your best friend right about now.

idk about his, but mine throws NO codes. i scanned it just to see if maybe something came up. but nothing.
