View Full Version : I need my Borla to be more Obnoxious!

All right, I have the Borla cat-back and the Random Tech downpipe. I think my Borla is way too quiet, but like the looks. What can be done to make this thing attract more attention???
Remove the resonator...?
Wait for the headers (SS)...?
Just suck it up and get an SLP...?

what do you have for a CAT? Maybe, that is if your still using the stock one, you could try a high flow cat. You would be suprised how much sound difference a high flow cat can produce.

Have a cutout welded in-line... or buy the SLP and put the borla tips on it... From what I've heard, the headers don't add too much to the gruff of the exhaust note.

wait for headers
my borla got louder with headers.

That's what the Random Tech downpipe is that he mentioned before.

chop the resonator

You could trade me for my Flowmaster 80!!!! I really wanted the Borla, but I'm just a poor boy! :D The Flowmaster is NOT quiet, but not fartpipe-like....it's kinda unique, but good.

To make any exhaust louder (stock/aftermarket) chop the resonator. If you don't care for the sound, just have it welded back on? It should only be a $35 job. Maybe $45-$50 to include the price of a new pipe to take its place.
If it's still to quiet and you don't want a cutout., "modifying"/replacing (with aftermarket) the cat. is next (cost-wise). --Does the RT downpipe for the GA INCLUDE the RT cat.? or is it JUST the downpipe??--
Headers are a larger pipe diameter which allow the engine to breathe better. Especially with a DP, I don't see how headers could not make a sound difference..?

Call me up I'll let you listen to my car.
As those know that have herd it, it's the loudest borla anyone has. Resonator is still in place just have headers and highflow cat.
Headers are louder because they flow more and have less tight bends for the noise to cancel on. Straighter flow and larger diameter from the headers will make the exhaust louder.
Trust me pat you want to wait till after headers are installed

I guess chopping the resonator is the solution. The Random Tech downpipe has an integral high flow cat. The headers should increase flow, and thus noise, but it seems nothing significant. I love the decelaration rumble of the SLP. It gets MUCH louder with a downpipe. Niiiiiiiice! But hey, with my Borla I got the Million Mile Warranty!!!!

I just don't see how you could cut up the cat-back. It's not cheap just to have some Joe at a muffler shop hack it up. Even if you put the resonator back on, it won't be the same. You'll lose those nice machine welds. That, and wouldn't tampering with the Borla void any warrenty. I know my Borla stays intact.

Yeah I am sure the warrenty will be shot, but I really don't think Jake is all to concerned with warrenties at this point.
The headers will make the "car" louder, but not necessarily the exhaust.

Someone up top said that headers would make an insignificant difference. If you reread what I typed, I said, "I don't see how headers could NOT make a sound difference.?" So, I wasn't refuting that headers make the exhaust louder. :) Hopefully I avoided a phone call ;)
After you cut the res., you'll have a ****load of drone... Personally, I don't mind it, but if you hate it, keep the resonator and just add the cut out?

Okay....s'pose I should chime in.
Adding headers to my RT cat/Borla combo increased sound level very marginally. Removing the Borla resonator increased the noise a tad, but the wife hasn't noticed.....it took a while for me to notice the *slight* difference as well. Although, to be fair, I removed the resonator to pick up a bit of ground clearance, not increase noise. You're probably better off just selling your Borla and popping for a SLP (all bets are off when you add headers to a SLP car....).

Yeah!

But the sound would be sick!!! Anyone got a spare SLP?

Well, this thread caught my eye last night, so today I decided to cut out the resonator. After looking through the resonator, you will see that it is a bit restrictive (it sort of fans out the flow into a flat section and then brings it back into a circle). I can feel a VERY slight loss in low end, but there is a noticeable difference in the middle of the rpm band and a slight gain at the top end. I'd say maybe 3-4 HP. Not bad for $40.
I didn't do it for the performance though, I did it for the sound. It does sound different now, I can't quite think of the right word to describe it. It's raspier, but in a deep way, not high pitched at all. It doesn't make it any deeper, but it also doesn't make it any higher-pitched. I imagine that this is what the SLP sounds like. I don't know how it would sound with other mufflers, but it sounds good with my Magnaflow.
Overall, if you're looking for a slight difference in sound with the added perk of a couple horsepower, this is a nice mod. It gets a definite  from me.

Have you noticed any increase in drone?

I wouldn't call it a drone, but it is louder inside the car as well as outside. I don't know how the Borla drone is, but I've never really had one to begin with, so I really don't know how it would sound. Why not just get an SLP? I'd hate to see a nice Borla cat-back get hacked up and then you decide you don't like the sound.

Just had my resonator removed Yesterday on 01-27-03
Sounds Better, Has that distinct popping sound after you let off the throttle, love that sound, now need to put on the flowmaster's and 2.25" piping all the way back.....then after taxes get back, hopefully headers But im not gonna put the Nitrous back on her....

Yeah well,
Personally haing the TOG headers and SLP exhaust,
my car is extremely loud. Also installed a magnaflow
cat too. So I have 2 1/2 inch pipes all the way from the
headers. I called Aleroboy after I purchased the headers
and he told me it would be very very loud. I'm not complaining
though. P.M. me if you want to hear it over the phone.

SLP is the answer.... 2.5 will beat the Borla's 2.25 diameter all day. For the looks the Borla is killer though, as well as the calmer sound... I wish I could have the borla with the sound of the SLP!
...oh well

I mostly got the borla because of its looks and its own distinct sound. With my high flow cat and removed resonator, it increased the sound quite a bit.
