Hey, everyone. I'm looking at getting a Grand Am and selling my Rustang, but I'll be honest, I'm a complete Grand Am noob. My main concern is price. I have a ridiculous car payment right now, and I'm looking at just having something I can pay off quickly and then focus on more important things. Performance isn't so much an issue, with the exception that I don't really want the 4cyl SE. I'm sure you guys are partial to the GTs, but are the SEs pretty decent too? I've noticed a leather interior is hard to come by in the Grand Ams. Is that the case? Also, I was interested in finding a Grand Am with the built in XM radio, but wasn't sure if there was an easy way to tell which cars had that option. The little fin antenna on the top of some of the Grand Ams is the XM antenna, correct? So if I see the fin on a car listing, I'll know if it has the XM?

Nice little forum here. I hope I'll be able to find a nice GAGT and spend some time here. Thanks, guys!

I will let the more knowledge vets take care of this one but...
That is the XM antenna on the top. I have one on mine that came
with it from the dealer. I'm not sure if every GA that has a fin antenna
is typically XM ready but i don't see why not. Id ask in person though.

yeah those little antennas on the top are the xm, usually stock head until comes with built in xm ready radio. and grand ams are typically around 6000 for a gt give or take depending on mileage... someone is selling there grand am for around 6000 with a buncha mods on this site but forgot who to be exact.. maybe look into that?

good luck man

Thanks guys! I'll keep my eyes open. I'm still struggling over whether to go with a 6cyl SE or pony up and get a GT.

Get a GT w/ the SC/T package (hood and spoiler) and then get the SC/T kit from PFYC. You'll come out better in the long run, instead of having to buy everything like me... lol ;crap

Anniston, huh. I been up there before. Had to go to AAD to pick up some magazines for my unit in Benning when they were deploying for Operation Desert Spring in 2002.

Well the same car but sometimes cheaper would be an Oldsmobile Alero. Which with a GLS package you'd get the 3400v6 (same as grand am) and leather seats. Just a suggestion though.

Both SE's and GT's are great cars. If anything, the 2.4L and 2.2L Ecotec motors have more potential for power than the 3400 LA1. But for out of the box performance, yes the V6 is more spunky. If you get a GT, watch out for the infamous LIM gasket leak. It's big money to fix, and it's not a matter of if it will happen, it's a matter of when it will go. Another concern is a clogged cat. 02+ models seemed to have this issue, mine did, and some others I know had the same issue. Other than that, these are great cars if taken care of, but if neglected, they'll fall to crap quickly. As long as you'll be on here, you'll find good help and advice for either troubleshooting, or making the GA go a bit faster and look better. G/L with the GA search. BTW, GT's usually go for about $7k-$9k at used dealers, cheaper from private sellers.

Thanks for the extra advice guys. I'm still keeping my eyes open. It seems that all the local ones aren't in the greatest of shape.

Oh yeah? Anniston's alright, but the Anniston Army Depot is a pretty cool place. It seems like everyone out here, including myself, work for one of the military contractors. Aside from the neurogical chemical scares, it's fun when they detonate some of the munitions.

some 4 cylinder SE's come with manual transmissions. in case your mustang has one and youd like to have one.

That's another thing I'm debating with myself. I'd love to have another manual, but I'm worried it would make finding a GA with some of the options I want even tougher.

yeah. i check autotrader for them and they are usually pretty base. BUT GM has a supercharger for the 2.4. would be a nice HP bump. they have one for the ecotec but it only says its for the cavalier. but im sure you could make it work.

I might look into some performance mods. To be honest, the Mach I have right now is pretty quick, and I'm trying to get away from that a little bit. Trying to settle down, if you will. And maybe trying to get back into my Pontiac roots, since my first car ever was a Pontiac.

That's pretty sweet though. I didn't know there were so many mods for Grand Ams. To be honest, I wish I had looked at Grand Ams sooner.
