Car is a Buick, it has a old 3800 motor. We just picked this up the belt was dry rotted and on way to autozone, the belt broke, He put a new one on in parking lot, put it in reverse, than it just died on him, car doesnt get spark, we almost thought it was the coil packs, went to junk yard other day and put a new one on... any ideas? car turns over but just doesnt spark... could the belt have sliced a wire when it broke?

almost sounds like the packs you got are beat. gettin power how from the harness?
How is that harness actually going to that coil (you know from the engine harness.)
Does it look like that belt might of slapped off any grounds perticularlly motor to frame grounds?
i might be wrong but isn't there one right near the a/c compressor on those older 3800's?

not really sure, we tried 3 packs and none of them work, so it's not the pack. I should check grounds but i'm wondering if it sliced a wire off the harness at bottom there. its hard to see down there.

The good old 3800 I. Get some sand paper and clean the base when the coil pack sits. It looks dirty from the pics. If you need a free alt, Pm me and i can give you the hook-up.

The belt wrapped around the crank and on the inside of the pulley someone told me that there are steel guides around the crank sensor that it reads off and if one of them got bent you think it would throw it off?

If the belt breaks, wouldn't that throw off the timing?

That's another ideal, becuase they wont start if the crank sensor is bad.

no, you are thinking of a timing belt.

Oh. OK. Thanks Rocket. IDK what made me think that the timing belt and the accessories belt were tied in somehow...

Go to autozone.com and join the site. They will give you access to a chilton manual in the howto section.

The clearance is about the thickness of a business card if one got bent it will wipe out the crank sensor.
