View Full Version : Stage I Complete!

I finally got the ASE chip back and installed tonight. This completes "Stage I" of the 12-Second Turbo project. I named this stage "Bolt-On's" because they are the cheaper, do-it-yourself mods that everyone performs. I will also be getting the car dyno'd to lay a bunch of the BS to rest and show actual gains with the following:
- K&N Hi-Flow Intake Setup
- SLP Exhaust
- ASE Chip
- 180 Degree Thermostat
My initial impressions are it pulls MUCH harder than stock! Throttle response has a BAD hesitation when you first stomp the gas. I think a larger throttle body will solve this. The worst part now is that since I have a lowly SE :D , I only have 15" rims with trash Yoko tires. After my test drive tonight, I realize that I have NO traction in 1st OR 2nd gear under WOT!
Overall, I'm impressed with the performance for the amount of money and ease of install. Stay tuned for dyno results (should be within the week ...)
Also, a question for ASE owners: Since the ASE chip is non-flashable, does it "learn" like the stock chip with fuel trim settings, etc.? Didn't know if that info was stored on another chip or the PROM itself ...

Awesome Project, and way to bring it forward. Just do this for yourself... go easy on the tranny, even though ASE does some nice work for it. But I believe DHP will have something more potent (and protective) for the 4t45 in the next quarter. If you can feel the tranny shift then you are all right... but there should be some good things in store down the road. Kinda ideal for your Stage III, is that right???? ;)
Keep it coming! Spring will be here soon!!!!:D

no offense but why did you get the ASE if your not going to use it in your tubro project. Whats stage two? Have fun with the turbo project, I know I am ;)
Damn you PICRacing I want my manifold!

Stage II is engine work. Heads, headers, larger TB and of course the suspension and brakes to back up the horsepower.
I went with the ASE because it will carry me through Stage II. And what other opion is there? NONE! DHP has been dragging their feet, so I had no choice. That and I wanted to increase trans line pressure.
Also, since I got the daughterboard, I don't think I'll have a problem selling the ASE chip when I go back to stock for the re-flash! I'm sure someone would love an ASE without the 4 day downtime!

I have the tranny cooler and remote filter ready to install when it warms up in this God-awful state!!! I will probably go visit DHP (they're only 10 miles from me!) after I get some engine work done and see what kind of custom work they'll do for me. I'm hoping Raysbestos comes out with the kevlar clutch packs before I am ready to bolt-on the turbo tho!
Hey man! Good luck! I'll be following your progress. I hope you hit 12s! Its gonna be a lot of work and $$...I'm not sure if a big turbo is gonna do it---but I'm rooting for ya.....If that ASE will work in an 03 I'll buy it off ya when I get my new GT....Maybe see you at Milan this summer?
Good Luck!

If the turbo won't, the direct port N2O will! :D
I think the ASE will pretty much only work in another 99 SE with the CXPA computer type ... sorry!
And yes, will definitely see you in Milan this Spring! Not only with my car, but prolly racing the Spec V my girlfriend is buying tomorrow!

I know.....your right....My engine and transmission condition is proof that Alcohol and N2O don't mix!!
One time I wanted to do a monster burn-out so I sprayed making a right turn......Took 50% off my tires....left a cloud bigger that Chernoble....and backfired out my intake so hard I blew all my sensors out my intake......DUMB DUMB DUMB!!!!:nono: :nono: :nono:
I'm gonna be kinder to the '03.....:stupid:

I have an appointment tomorrow evening at 6PM to pull a few dyno runs. As soon as I get home tomorrow evening, I'll post the results!
STAY "TUNED"!!!

Well, I stopped at Detroit Speedworks to dyno and had an interesting learning experience! They use a Mustang dyno which simulates "Real World" characteristics such as wind drag on the car, parasitic drivetrain losses, etc. He told me from the get go I'd be between 5-7HP lower than a DynoJet reading.
So, he ran the first pull in 3rd gear:
Max Power: 143.8 @ 5750 RPM
Max Torque: 171.8 @ 4250 RPM
Flywheel: ~180HP & 215 lb/ft (assuming 20% loss)
At about 5000 RPM, the car started bogging really bad after the shift to third, so he did another pull in 2nd gear:
Max Power: 136.3 @ 5250 RPM
Max Torque: 153.8 @ 4250 RPM
So, after looking at the plots, you can see the definite "dip" just after 5000 RPM. He said had the car pulled consistently, he'd approximate I'm running about 150WHP. The "dip" could be caused by the car exceeding 100MPH in 3rd gear puts EXTREME load on the barrel which can cause:
1 - ASE chip running too much timing and tripping knock sensor
2 - Engine dumping fuel in to cool cylinders causing "over-rich" condition
In conclusion, he said due to good 'ole OBDII, I'd get a better pull on a DynoJet at around 155WHP. But, his simulates REAL WORLD! He said this is 99.5% what will *really* happen to the power curve on the dragstrip.
So, all-in-all, it met my 150-155WHP estimation and I think I will stick with the Mustang dyno because I would rather have DHP tune me on this than a DynoJet after hearing what he had to say. Going by his 150WHP estimate, this throws me at 187.5 at the flywheel ... i.e. 17.5HP over stock.
To show you all the funky graph, I'll try to scan them in and post them this weekend.

Dyno Run #1 (3rd Gear):

Dyno Run #2 (2nd Gear):

As you can see, the Mustang dyno "loads" the car too much causing it to "ping" above 5000 RPM. I will re-dyno using a DynoJet for Stage I and also when I complete Stage II.
However, when I have DHP do my custom PCM prgram, I will use the Mustang because it more realistically emulates "real world" performance.

Mustang Dynos are good for simulating driving conditions but they are not that hot for tuning. Your most likely going to need to find a local dyno jet, (if you need names/locations I have a few :) ) unless they have changed thier policy DHP will NOT tune on anything but a Dynojet. Cool pulls thought I cant wait to see how this project pans out..

Greg at Detroit Speedworks said he has Dave (from DHP) doing cutom tunes in there all the time on their Mustang dyno. He might be doing it independent from DHP tho.
Send me some numbers of places that are open on Saturdays or later than 5! The only one I found was Advanced Chassis Dyno, but they are closed on weekends over the winter.
I'd like to do a few DynoJet pulls on Stage I to more accurately calculate flywheel HP.

I'm going to need to be going into Advanced on the weekend one of these days in the next couple of weeks, the owner is a friend of mine I can ask him if you can run with us,would you be interested in that? :)

Well ... I FINALLY got back to ACD to run on the DynoJet. I am much happier with these results! It's amazing how much of a difference when the PCM doesn't try to shut the engine down! :D
Anyway, of the 3 runs, here is the best:
158.6WHP = 198.25HP at the flywheel
189.8 lb/ft = 237.25 lb/ft at the flywheel
Assuming the SE base of 170HP, the gains are:
+28.25HP and +37.25 lb/ft
Not too shabby for just a RAT intake, SLP cat-back, ASE chip, 180-degree thermostat and Mobil 1 oil.
I'll have the runs scanned on my site as soon as I get my %$&#*( scanner working.
did ya do a personal stock dyno test? just wonderin

No, unfortunately, it was hindsight. According to a few people on this board that work for GM, the flywheel measurements from the manufacturer are usually within 2-5%. Close enough for me!

Hey craig nice job with the gains, maybe ill do the samething your doing but with the supercharger and not the turbo, us 99 GASEs need to stick together!
