View Full Version : Cost of Replacing High Pressure Power Steering Hose? 450??

Hey everyone. I have a 1999 Grand Am GT. I blew my high pressure power steering hose and I got an estimate from Meineke for $448 to replace the hose and flush it. I was wondering if anyone could please give me some input on this price? Is it high, low or reasonable?

Based on some of the prices I've seen around the web for other cars this seems high especially considering this isn't a dealership. However, I have read that it isn't easy to access the hose and replace it. The part seemed particularly pricey however. Here is the breakdown:

$165 for the high pressure hose
2 hours at $84.75/hours labor
$80 flush
$40 "pack"

Thanks for any input you can provide!

Skip the flush and what's that "pack" about?

That'll save you $120 right off the bat. Those two things aren't necessary.

The hose is like $65 at auto zone. Just buy it yourself and find someone that will charge you an honest amount for it. Its really not bad, should take them an hour at most, but will charge you the book time which is probably 2 hours. Or if you have a mechanic friend, just offer them $100 to change it for you.

not hard at all, i changed power steering line on grand caravan(crappiest set-up ever), took me about 5 minutes to locate both ends and about 5-10 mins to snake out. hardest part was finding a store that had it in stock...

Thanks for all of the replies everyone! I'm glad I didn't go through with it and have Meineke do it. I'm away from home right now so I can't do it myself, but I will be going to Autozone tonight to try and hunt down the part and I'll get another mechanic to do it. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. Thanks again!

i would call that place back and ask for a broken down estimate then ask if that service comes with a hooker i just replaced my steering rack and the hi p hose for 350 bucks i paid 61$ for the hose and 85$ for a yard rack the rest was labor i would definatly ask that shop if they will "service" you after
