Suppose I have an Optima red top battery, new in the box. How long can they usually be allowed to sit stored in the box and unused, and still have enough charge to install, start up and go with no issues?

Should last a while, we have 6-7 month old batteries at work that we sell and they work fine. If you are worried about it, you could buy a trickle charger to keep it charged up.

My buddy just gave me his old Optima yellow top, it is 5 years old and sat for over 2 years in his garage, charged it up at work and it checked out fine.

Key is to fully charge up the battery before installing it.

no, it sat in the box this whole time. The battery in my '04 died or drained somehow, so I threw the Optima in there. We'll see if it holds a charge.

i got a friend that works at sears auto and says he flips the battery upside down for a second or two after he sells one cuz they always seem to come back dead in a couple weeks after sitting for a while. pretty sure they arent optimas though

Contact Optima for the best answer, but also putting a trickle charger on wouldn't hurt

So far so good, but then again, it's been pretty warm out. Still starts up every day or every other day. I'll carry a jump starter box in the trunk for the time being.

fwiw,( battery was bought new, sat for 3 years, installed last Summer w/o charging.)

No problems with it yet when the car sits long periods....

Did not try to start it on the day of the "polar vortex." Started it the day after, was 8-12 deg F. out, not counting wind chill. Started instantly on the first turnover.
