Just wondering if anyone has any advanced knowledge in the department of cone air filters. I was browsing around on sites like nopi and such and I noticed there are alot of different types of cone filters for intakes..............my main question is what is better for flow, foam or cotton with oil (K&N). Also what is the big deal with HKS's Super mega flow filter?? Why is it so expensive?? What the hell is a stainless steel cone filter?? Will a foam filter on a CAI repel water better than a cotton filter with oil (K&N)?? just trying to get a discussion started because I don't think we ever really dug into this area.........but I could be wrong.

Here is some pics of the filters I was talking about.....

you tend to find foam filters on turbo cars more.

For our cars... ANYTHING will work.. we dont push enough HP to use all filters capable air volume inhalation hehe

i am curious because i noticed that the cai filter does get wet, not that this bothers me BUT i was wondering if a foam filter repels water better will not trading off for air flow. i know some people say that foam restricts air flow more thn a cotton and oil cone. i am just trying to dig deeper into this......

also with all the engine work i am doing now i will need any extra air molecule i can get:D

You havent seen 900hp Turbo'ed Toyota Supras with foam filter before

Foam filters are PERFECT for High Horse engines!

If i had to guess, either one is fine to get some what wet, but i wouldnt submerge it or anything lol

EDIT: ive actually been cooling it with the posting... If i wasnt.. ide probly be at 250 rite now

I have a foam filter on my Motorcycle as well.

Foam filter come in handy because they are

Re-usable
Easy to clean
have lots of filter... to filter!
Provide enough flow for REALLY high powered engines.

 ............ :nono: :nono: :nono: That will make the filter break down silly!

Go to the store and buy some foam filter Cleaner and Oiler.

Make sure to keep foam filters oiled properly, or they will allow small particles to pass and you to be screwed in the long run! Especially with Carb'ed engines

lol.. I have had the tractor for 14 years, same filter, all I need is a carb kit now. (just worn, dirty)

And my Lawnboy push mower is 27 years old, always been washed in gasoline.

Ahh, they don't buildem like they used to.

So what I got from that is a foam filter restricts air flow more than a K&N but filters particles better than a cotton oiled filter.

So basically..........

Filtering Properties

Foam>K&N

Air Flow

K&N>Foam

Would we all agree?? Also what is up with the stainless steel filters?? I see them on nopi......I attached a pic above.

I am assuming those have stainless steel mesh and constrution but still have the cotton element that requirs oiling........

hehe ya Tony

The metal thing would most likely to be for....

Hold shape of the foam and make sure no BIG particles can damage the filter.

Both flow the same. If the foam flowed LESS... they would have K&N intakes on 900hp supras

You'll be happy with the foam one. Remember this as well... i dont think ive seen a GA yet with a foam filter!

You need to decide what you are going for too in a filter.

If you go with AEM filters, you will get the same thing as a K&N...but you will get much better results at lower RPMs. K&N will give you a bit more in the higher RPMs (mind you this is with a CAI...so you are going to see a change no matter what)...but tends to lack a little on the lower RPMs.

It just depends on what you are looking for.

I figure as long as you stick with a decent company and don't go for some crappy filter...you should be good. :)

Tony, how's that WAI K&N working for you...it was hot yesterday (seemed like it)...notice any issues with it? OR have you gotten your CAI installed?
