After getting an oil change, my engine has been making a kind of ticking noise at startup. The noise gets faster as I rev. The moment the car shifts above 60km/hr, the noise practically goes away (from what I can hear) until the next time I start the car.

Any idea? I was thinking bad lifter but would the sound go away when used as above?

2003 Grand Am 2.2 with approx 160k

2.2 i would say lifter also. first check oil level.

next time you start the car pull the oil fill cap and listen if it gets louder. if it does than that would be a good sign of lifters

Oil level is good.

Is it safe to open the fill cap with the engine on? Any precautions I need to take?

maybe exhaust gasket too? check that, some of stupidiest pain in the ass things, could be a lot, or get one of those hearing things u can get at advanced auto so you can hear where noise is coming from.

When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your engine?
Try some seafoam in the vacuum line.
$12 a can at Part Source.
Couldn't hurt.

I don't think this was ever done. I tried Lucas Oil which didn't get rid of the ticking noise but I did find the engine sounded quieter on the highway.

I've seen pictures of where to put Seafoam on a V6 engine but not the 2.2. Does anybody have a picture?

Highly doubt seafoam is going to get rid of engine ticking. My 2 cents.

I brought it into a shop and they said it was the serpentine belt tensioner. They replaced it and $300 later, it's still making the same noise.

Now they're saying it's an exhaust manifold stud that needs to be replaced. Estimated cost is $395 for 5hrs of labour plus $18 per stud.

I'm thinking I need to get a second opinion..

I think you do too - You would see the tensioner bad, and with a stethoscope you would hear it just being bad. Link (http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-Automotive-Stethoscope-W80582/dp/B0002KO39W)

For 10$ I would go to a store pick one up and listen around, and you will find the problem.

300 to replace a tensioner, was that the belt too? In the 2.2 engine do you need to take the engine mount out like the 3.4?

Sounds like someone needs to find a new shop. At the rate they're going, you'll have a new engine.

The lifters on Grand Am's are synonomous for making loud sounds. Especially the 3400's

my car was doing the same thing not to long ago and it ended up being that one of the spark plugs wasnt all the way tightened. just a thought.

I have a 3.4 and i have been getting some pretty good ticking noise since the first time i changed my LIM gasket, then i replaced it again a few months ago and the ticking went away and after driving it more the ticking has came back, i used to alway think it was just a header gasket leak, but now im thinking its something more, especially after reading this...

80% chance its a valve tick i got a little bit of one at 170k lucas will kill it for me if i do it at oil change

It was a broken exhaust manifold stud.

That would make the ticking noise - good find - hope it was not hard to replace
