Driving around tonight, around the city, I notice a slight gas smell. Turn around to head home, and as I'm cruising at about thirty, the car starts to bog down, then eventually dies. I popped the hood after trying to start it and gas literally poured out of my WAI filter. WTF would cause it to suddenly flood like that?

After getting it towed, I'm not even sure it flooded.... there was a huge pool of gas under the car. Haven't had a chance to look around yet to see where it might be leaking, but since it was INSIDE the filter, I assume that it has to be flooding?

Not 100% but maybe the fpr is leaking into the vacuum line.

On an older 3.1 a guy brought to me this was the case and literally the whole intake tract was full of raw fuel.

I'll have to take a look at that. I just replaced the FPR last year, it better not be that again.

Okay, so now that I had a chance to look at it in daylight, looks like the line popped off the top of the FPR. No big deal, got that ziptied down to at least hold it. However, when I turn the key to on (not trying to start it), and go just manually open the TB, gas just pours out of the motor. Why does it keep flooding the engine with gas when I'm not even trying to start it? Did my FPR go bad again, and its just pouring gas in?

FPR receives manifold vacuum signal. In the case of a ruptured diaphragm in the FPR, fuel could be forced through the vacuum line - remember, the fuel pump will run for about 2 seconds at KOEO to build rail pressure. Raw fuel in the inlet ducting further supports this. Disconnect vacuum line from FPR and key on: is fuel expelled from the nipple?

injector(s) stuck open?

Thats kinda what I'm thinking now. Hopefully going to have a chance to look at it Monday, if I'm lucky. What I'd give to own another vehicle that I could at least pull my GA around to the garage with

injector(s) stuck open?

My first guess. A blown FPR wouldn't flow quite that much fuel.

Should have just replaced the FPR right away, thats all it ended up being. 2 FPRs and a fuel pump in the last 12 months lol

Don't feel too bad, my fuel pump died almost a month ago. Except my original had 129K on it. :hay:

I'm at 59.5k miles.... I've had 2 LIMs, 1 FP and 2 FPRs, not to mention who knows how many window motors/blower resistors etc etc etc

I've officially started to shop for a new car to replace this one, and its probably one of two specific vehicles :o

Damn, My LIM just went once, all four original window regulators reside in the car, and my blower motor resistor JUST went yesterday.

OH? Part out?

Everyone but me just must have horrible luck with GA's?? I owned mine from 23k - 64k and I never once had a single problem with the car. Changed the oil regularly and flushed everything once, never had brake problems, window problems, anything. My friend owns it @ 72k right now and he has yet to have a problem as well.

My old GA SE was the same except the LIM one time in the 80k miles we owned it.

Most likely. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing the car go as a whole.... would be much easier.

I'd like to nab your headlights as a spare set, and so I can clean up my existing ones without worry of not having headlights on the car.

I would require a set in exchange, which is mostly why I don't want to part it out. I'm not going to spend time and money trying to find stock pieces to put back in the car I'm trying to get rid of lol

Thanks, but I think I'll stick around. Why don't you go post another thread about how you're going to sell/build/blow up/whothehellknows your car?

Also, I'd like to take the chance to point out that I explained what was wrong (and that I had fixed it) a whole two posts below the one you quoted.

One of them is actually fairly practical and inexpensive... but sometimes I think it's ugly. It would be a killer car to mod, though.

Fyi - Excessive amounts of fuel in the intake can and will destroy the lim gaskets so I am hoping this wasn't the case for you and that you caught it before it did more serious damage.

I'm going to be slightly irate if that happens.

Was that the first, second, third or 100th time you decided to pull your motor apart to sell/part out/turbo/fix?

FYI, anything that causes the motor to fail would PROBABLY fall into "something to worry about". Not that I don't have the means of fixing it, but more the fact that the car would be down AGAIN, and I'd be putting more time and $$ into something I don't want.

that sucks

my car must be the most reliable POS ever. the came with a thick folder going back to when the car was bought back in july of 2000

major repais
transmission in 2008 at 140,000
struts in 2009 at 159,000
ebioch springs in 2009 at 159,00 miles (acourdig to the recepits)
speed built sway bars in 2009 at 159,000 (i have recepits before some one says i doubt it blah blah blah)
and currently a new engine becuase of a LIM failure (the cars first) at 165,000

the car is still rocking the factory fuel pumplol

it does need a rear speaker or speakers or the factory sub went out it gets buzzy if it is perfectly balanced i have the sound moslty going to the front to avoid this;crap

You can't seriously complain about repairs starting at 140,000 miles. Thats a lot of miles to criticize a car for being a POS. Maybe at 40,000 but not 140,000.
