Ok, ive asked this before in a seperate thread regarding headlights, but no one knew, so i made a whole topic for it...

im getting neons soon (within a week) and i really need to know what are the state laws for neons in IL...

I really want blue, but i doubt i will make it out of my garage before getting pulled over with blue neons...LOL

What about white?

I have a blue/white scheme on my car, so white will look good, not as good as blue, but atleast i wont be paying 5000/yr in tickets...

any link with state laws?

ive heard many different stories. Ive heard you cant have and blue, red, green, or colors like that glowing on the outside of the vehicle. I also heard that you cannot have those sort of colors blinking anywhere on the vehicle. And lastly, i think its ok to have neons inside the vehicle as long as the officer cannot see them. Hope that helped you out a little. All this info comes from a buddy of mine who is a police officer in illinois.

Call your local police department, they will give you the actual laws unlike webpages online which don't get updated when laws change.

I asked a local county sheriff (Kane County) about neons and he said that stationary, even at stoplights is ok. as soon as you start driving they will nail you. Interior neons are ok as long as they cannot see the bulb from outside the car.

ok say its legal to have your neons on while your stoped at a light. Not every cop is going to know that law so they are going to pull you over. when they check into the law and find out its not right they are probably going to get you for your tinted windows and everything else they can find illegal on your car. So if your going to get neons i would only turn them on when your parked in a parking lot. thats what i do to be safe and keep my tint and other stuff on my car. just my 2cents

The police are supposed to know all the laws before they pull you over for something. I do agree with you that they will look into other things you've done to your car. If you watched that MTV special on street racing, when the cops pulled them over they had tape measures out and were looking at illegal intakes and everything.

Good plan. If you want to keep yourself out of trouble....only use them while parked. We had this discussion on the old forum before the meltdown, but....in NJ they are illegal, period. I don't really hassle people for them unless they have done something else. However, they do grab attention, including cops. Gives us a good enough reason to run a license plate or watch you for a while.

I watched a guy last week after noticing his purple neons from afar. I saw him pass another car (that was speeding) across a double yellow line toward oncoming traffic in the rain...and he was from out of state and didn't know the area. If not for the neons I probably would not have followed him. He got a handfull!! :tool:

Maybe laws are different in other states....I doubt it, but maybe. Even if they are, they are still attention grabbers.

We should know EVERY law eh? Make sure you tell that to the next cop that pulls you over....maybe ask him/her to recite a few as a test!

Officially and as far as the IL State Police is concerned, neon lights are for off-road use only.

Well don't you agree that you should know the laws before giving people tickets about it? I was just replying to the person that said maybe some cops pull people over and dont understand the laws themselves.

I agree with the cop pulling you over for other than the original reason. When i got pulled over for my blue turnsignals, he also checked and saw my front license plate wasnt on and then he told me to roll up my windows to see if they were tinted (which they were), and i told him that he didnt have that right unless he saw them before they were down. Well in the end, he ended up wasting mine and his time for nothing cause he let me go clean. Pointless.

I'll agree with you that we should know laws that we are issuing summonses for. However, to memorize every single law word for word? Nah!

Also, sometimes it's not a case of knowing the law. Some times laws can be ambiguous and subject to interpretation of judges. For example, in NJ, there is no law which clearly states that window tint is illegal. The statute is actually for obstructed view. There have been fights against the law and case law established as a result that window tint constitutes a view obstruction. So you can see the problem with your statement that cops should KNOW the laws...

Don't get me wrong....there are guys out there who will write everyone and anyone they can. Although I would tend to believe that this number is far lower than what you believe it is.... I remember what it was liek to be "harassed" by cops when I was 18 and driving my 80 Z-28. Ya know what? In retrospect I deserved ever one of those tickets, because I was driving like an A-hole!

Oh, for those in NJ. A new law was passed making window tint LEGAL for those witha doctors prescription. The only bad part is that you have to have some sort of degenerative disease in your eyes.....great huh? Good luck with the sript.

Hate to tell ya....we can go over your car with a fine tooth comb if we want to. Once you're stopped, you're ours. I give you credit though....you've got your self a SET trying to argue laws with a cop. I probably would have written you a few tickets and told you to "explain" the laws to a judge so that we can all have a better understanding as to what we are supposed to do. BTW, is your last name followed by ESQ?

This is why i love cops, they write you tickets so you can explain it to the judge, im sorry but you guys are on a power trip. I have made cops look like total ass's in court, anyone who knows their rights and laws can win anything in court, and i record the conversations when ever i get pulled over. I had a cop bull****ing about how he would love to impound my car and how he hates little italian kids with their daddys car. Lets just say he isnt an on duty anymore in Franklin Park, il. btw yea he also searched my car without any reason and also trashed it.

If that is true, then good. There is no need for that. Cops like that give the rest a bad name. However, if someone thinks that they are an authority on a law which I know inside and out, then maybe that is the person who talks themselves into a ticket. I don't believe that I have a power trip. It's part of my job. It's not my favorite part of the job, by FAR, but it is a part which I have to do. I am extremely fair and understanding, but at the same time I'm not going to take a load of crap from some twit who doesn't know diddly sh!t about what he's saying.

I know that no matter what I say to you or a lot of people like you that your attitude toward cops will not change, so I'll just stop now. We'll just wait to see who the first person you call will be when you have an emergency...

Yea i see your view, i will also admit that there are a good percent of cops who are cool as hell and understand our teen lives and give us warnings or even talk to us about our cars, but im talking about the ones who give total attitude from the second you get pulled over and could give a rats ass on your reason for violating the law. Im not tryin to bash you or other cops but there is an equal share of bad cops and good cops, i guess you just have to pray your getting pulled over by a cop who understands. Anyways i just wanted to clear up that i wasnt bashing you or any of the other cops on this forum.

watch out for 5 0 !
