View Full Version : oil pressure gauge problem?

So I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge on my Grand Am today. But it only reads 40 psi, if I rev it it slowly moves up a few psi then slowly goes back down. Is it possible I installed it wrong at the block? IE pushed the nylon tube too far into the fitting? It's not the gauge because I also tried the gauge out of my Z28, same thing.

i found this info during my search for the same answer...
Oil Pressure @ 3000 RPM: 30 psi minimum
Oil Pressure @ 900 RPM: 10 psi minimum
my 3400 reads the same, 40 on a warm engine, and my 2.4 reads close to 60 cold start then drops down to around 40... sitting at 600rpm idle it reads just over 20psi... you should be fine with your readings...

Yeah, these cars don't run really high pressure. With the oil warm you'll usually only see around 20psi at idle and 35-50 at cruise depending on rpm.
