That series GA has a horrible history with Intake and Head gaskets. I personally own a 2000 GA and I have replaced the head gasket once and the intake gasket TWICE in the 3 years I've owned it. It has 20k less miles on it also. Also, check the intake manifold gasket as they like to fail and leak oil. Don't forget to check the transmission for leaks also. (If you haven't noticed, the GA's have leaking problems) Other than that, $1000 isn't a bad price if the car runs and all you need it for is to drive it from A to B. However, I would see if you could take him down a hundred or 2. That way you have wiggle room for potential repair costs that are in the immediate vicinity.
