Wife went to take off in our 3.4 02 GA this morning. She tried to make a U-TURN on our street when she heard a thud from the driver side wheel area. There is no power steering. Everything was fine last night when parked. I have not been able to duplicate the thud noise. fluid looks good, belt is fine.

Just don't want t buy a new pump and find out that wasn't the issue.

Second guess. rack and pinion?? Is there a way to tell the difference?

car only has 135000 KMS (not miles) on it.

Lift the car up off the ground and look at the Rack, and have your wife turn the wheel while looking at it. If it feels like it's binding up and making a a errrrr noise chances are it's the pump. Check the ps fuild too.

So of the Grand Am's have a valve inside that controls the amount of power the pump will kick out.

These Racks and Subframes have a very bad rep of giving out. Just happen to me today on the way home from work. But I found this video which shows to replace the rack and subframe.
