**edit: New posts with tech questions**

Hey all -

Looking for info on the Getrag 5 spd in an 04 Alero - searched but didn't find much, is it the F23?

Background: Used to have a 99 GA til 2005 (where most of my posts came from) traded for a Maxima, then a RedLine, now I'm driving an 04 GTO, but need a winter beater - looking at a 2004 Alero EcoTec 5spd with 121k for $2495

Family member had a 99 Alero 3400, and I had the 2.4 Grand Am, so I'm quite familiar with the N-body parts, wheel bearing issues, brakes etc only thing is both our cars were auto, therefore I'm not too familiar with the 5 speed.

Also, the package is weird....it's listed as a GL, and it's got alloys, cruise, power locks and a spoiler, but crank windows and no traction control which makes me think it's a GX with a few options. Thoughts/opinions?

Should also clarify that it's got OEM Olds alloys and OE spoiler, which is why I was wondeirng about the option package.

Yeah the 5 speed is the F23. Not too sure about the option package... it may be a GL1 or GL2 I'm guessing. My girlfriend's 04 Eco GL Alero doesnt have ABS or Traction either, but it came with 15" alloys and a spoiler.. They stopped making ABS/Trac a standard feature in 01 or 02 I think.

Yeah, cool, I like Aleros. The 5-speed is the only version I didn't have.

Haha I was just bein douche-y......kinda excited actually; I know the Eco's are pretty stout engines.

Yea, read up on SpyHunter's 2.4 stout may not be the word for them lol

Haha I'll have to search for that - they're a different family of engines, though, right? The 2.4 TC vs. the 2.2 Ecotec?

I believe you are correct, mine was a 3.4, I didn't do a ton of reading on them specifically. I just kinda absorbed a drip here and there from what these guys have discussed in the few years I've been prowling around these parts.

Yea, that other thread on here, they're puttin' up links, check 'em out. b-e-a-s-t!

Picked it up yesterday - going to change the oil, trans fluid & pump out/refill the clutch and power steering reservoirs. It doesn't have ABS, thought that was standard on all n-bodies after 1999?

2002 is when gm got cheap. I have a loaded 2001 Alero 2.4 5-speed, ABS and ECT. I did not know later Aleros did not have fog lights or rear disk, also standard mickey mouse mirrors. My car has break away ones.

The F23 is a good trans, it just has a gear rattle at low speeds. They say to over fill it a little to stop it. I just changed my fluid and put some royal purple ATF in it, over filled it little and almost no noise.

That was also the first year of the EcoTec in the N-bodies right?

I saw the manual spec's 1.8 quarts for drain/fill, but searching all over the interwebs some are putting 2+ in, and there was mention of a TSB that said use 3 to quiet it, but I know too MUCH fluid can be as damaging as too little.

& Yeah this thing has drum brakes in the back....was a bit surprised to see that on an 04 when my moms 99 had disc.

I'm not certain at this point....fairly sure, but need to check and get back to you. Haha, back in the day when I joined, couldn't decide on a username so ended up with that

time for a rear disc conversion.

How difficult is that? Just need pads/rotors/calipers and a caliper bracket?

Bump - is the front wheel bearing the same with no ABS? Auto parts stores & GM parts stores online list only one bearing, with or without ABS, & I know they have a connector for it - same part?

Nope, no ABS or Traction control

My brother in law had a 3.4L 2004 Grand Am Se that did not have ABS or Traction control.
The TCS button on the dash was a blank piece of plastic on his car.

Seems to be a tough to find one that does not have it.

As far as I can tell from searching, there is only one bearing and it comes with the speed sensor, you just don't plug anything into it if you don't have ABS.

carsarecool

That's what I'm thinking, although figured the non-ABS would be a bit cheaper - oh well

Took off the filter cap, and noticed some....hmm...not sure how to put it..."gook" (maybe coolant?) in the oil filter slot, in the middle....might be able to see it:

Coolant looks fine, no dash lights etc

Second thing - was going to change plugs; have OEM AC-Delco 41-105 Iridiums to install. Pulled the current plugs, & and it turned out to be an NGK TR55GP, also shorter in length than the Delco....any reason for this? One plug better/worse than the other? Thought the Eco liked OEM, but not sure on that.

Anything?

msmith1956

You can't go wrong with Iridiums on these cars. OEM are fine as are the NGK Laser ones... NGK makes the Iridium plugs for AC/Delco.

ngks are good to run, i had em with no problems. right now got autolites in.. gotta change em out sometime cause it was going to be for running nitrous. but decided not to put that through the motor. so i got rid of it.

carsarecool

So either way they're NGK then, haha alright. Any reason why the NGK is shorter?

carsarecool
11-01-2012, 10:44 PM
Installed one plug and cranked it with no IDI cover, no problems clearance-wise

carsarecool
11-04-2012, 12:07 AM
So no theories on the shorter plug? (Besides whoever did it, used the wrong part)

msmith1956
11-04-2012, 09:36 AM
I have no idea why it's different ... maybe wrong part #, but not sure. You could look the part # that's on the plug and see what it says it's supposed to fit.

Plugs worked out okay, however need a different plug - the trans drain is stripped, and haven't been able to locate a drain plug for the Getrag F23 - anyone even know of a part #??
