My belt tensioner started making a tapping noise when the car is on. It started when I took off the belt tensioner to replace the AC compressor. Maybe something from the tensioner fell off or I didn't put the belt tensioner back on right? The belt tensioner also shakes.

The tensioners have studs that line up w/ the holes to ensure that you don't put it on wrong. It sounds like you need to replace it completely. Mine started doing that. The Delco model that you can get from any auto parts store will work fine

Get a bet tension tool if you have the money or borrow one from the auto parts store. It comes in very handy.. lol

You might not have it lined up right, or the casing might have cracked.
The stock tensioner has a weak spring and a weak case. They are known for cracking right where the spring comes out of the case, which adds some slop into it's movement and will make it jump around while running. Check it to make sure the the alignment pin is in the hole on the mounting. If that's not it and the case is cracked, replace it. I recommend a Dayco brand tensioner. I went through two OEM ones before that. Got mine from Advance Auto Parts. It has a much beefier case design and a stiffer spring.

I went to replace my belt about a month ago and figured I might as well replace the tensioner. When I took the tensioner off, the back was cracked and had a small chip where the stud braces against. I had no idea.

The pulley on mine just fell off one day completely destroying my belt. It only takes a couple minutes to replace and is not too expensive. Got mine from AZ for just over 35 bucks so not too bad.

But it was working fine before it was taken off and put back on. Is it possible it could be loose?

Have you taken it off yet to see if you had it lined up correctly?

Wow.

I changed mine and the idler pulleys years ago, and I think mine may have been cracked too. Had to warranty an idler pulley twice, but then it was fine after that.

I "think" my new one was Dayco, which is what advance has. Its like $40. I have been getting some good deals by ordering online and using coupon codes then just pickup in a store. Just search for advance auto coupon codes, I normally find them that are from 25% to 40% off. Some have minimum purchase amounts some dont. (TRT41 is the one I used for $40 off $100, I used TRT30 for 30% off $50+, DOW20 is $50 off 125+, there are more out there, not sure if these still work have to check them, I used one that was 31% off too recently)

Mine has been on for several years with no issues, still have the gatorback belt on that I did at that time. (might change that soon though)
