View Full Version : Drop a 15 where the spare tire goes?
Simple question, could you?
Reason is I don't want to take up any trunk room or as little as possible and I've already ordered a Audiobahn Flame Q sub with a nice matching mono sub amp rated at 600W rms.
top mount depth inches for the sub is 8, and for a sealed box it only needs 1.0-1.9 cu ft. worth of vol. which is one reason why I chouse that 15 inch sub, doesn't need alot of room to get it thumpin' compared to some others.

yeah you can I am planning on doing this as soon as I sell my other speakers.
To find your total volume of the tire well just take a bunch of packing peanuts and fill the tire well up with it and them measure the voulme of the peanite after you fill the well ad then design the box from there!.. I did this once but lost the measurement.

well if you build the fiberglass box right you can fit an 18" jl audio w6 with no problem. no pics yet still in process of finishing up my trunk.
Thanks for the info.
A 18 inch sub? Don't need to go that big, just drop a MTX RFL152 SPL comp. sub and that will blow away the comp. 4000 watts peak, 4.35 inches of cone excursion, and weights 56 lbs!:) Only down side is that it costs a grand but the thing is downright bulletproof. just joking around a bit though, JL's are cool.
Good luck with the JL, those have some serious thump to em.

Anyone have any idea how this would actually sound though? You'd be giving up the boost from having the subs firing back at you.

it actully doesnt SOUND bad it just doesnt seam as loud... unless you are Going for stait out SQ comp. that it will be good.. and if you want good SQ it is better to go with 10's or 12's not always.. (it is just a good rule of thumb)

Hey maurice, did you happen to measure the airspace, in cubic feet, of the spare tire well by any chance? If so, could you post what it was? I'll measure myself in a couple days if I have to, just curious if you or anyone knew the answer already. This is gonna play a big part in my new system.

You mention that the depth is 8 inches.... Kepp in mind you'll need another inch under that to clear the rear pole piece vent!! A kid came to my shop with two Solobarick 15's in a 3000 GT the other day, askinm' why it sounded funky. We pulled the subs, and found that the magnets were resting directly on the bottom of the box!!! Built a new box, pounds like crazy now.
The RFL is badass, but a couple things, since it was mentioned -
1: It sounds like sh*t, period. It's made to be LOUD, but to say it's not an SQ sub is a gross understatement, it's BY FAR the WORST sounding woofer EVER MADE. MTX never said otherwise - it's made to set records, not play music!!!
2: No way it's goin' in a spare tire well box - it needs almost 5 ft^3 ported, almost 4 sealed.
3: It's far from bulletproof. They pretty much self-destruct if you play them for long with any real power. 4000 watts peak is correct - for 5 or 10 seconds, tops. It's a "burp" sub, not a boom sub. We hooked one up the a US Amps USA400x (about 2000 to 2500 watts max) and pulled mid 150's from one woofer - for about 2 minutes of off & on play. We got a nice, long, test tone goin', and blew it up in 35 seconds.
I know you were only kidding, WOLF, but I see lot's of guys want to get one to be the baddst on the block, and it's just not the right sub for a street system, period. :shrugs:

He's got two smaller subs in the spare tire well right now but I'm sure he can answer most of your questions about it.
Yeah, I know about the MTX. Thats why I didn't get one, I was either going to get a Infinity Kappa perfect 12 inch sub or step up to a 15 with the Audiobahn. I went with the Audio. because I was impressed by the specs. Plus it looks cool with the crome flames and it looks like its built solid. It's not like I'm going to take to comps., just use it at probably 20% most of the time.
I've already had one compition worthy car back in the day anyway and I don't feel the need for another, just want to drop a sub in a area if possible that will not consume my trunk space if I decide I want to go on a trip. My Z24 was so loaded with crap that I couldn't even put my back pack in the trunk. Then I eventually got tired of hearing the loud thump of the subs and my ears started to suffer because of it. I'm more of a gear head that would rather hear the sound of the engine in the first place.

I've got 2 12" JL's in the spare tire well of both of my cars. They sound great, and you still have lots of trunk space. One thing, they sound great in the car with the trunk closed, but if you are behind the car and open the trunk, they sound really hollow. I'm not really sure why, but they sound great inside the car. I guess they just need the pressure build up from the trunk being closed. The volume of the hole is really too big for the JL's in a sealed application, but life goes on. I hope that made sense...its been a long day.
Same thing would happen to my Z24, has to do with the trunk itself. Think of your trunk as a large subwoofer incloser. Just like a sub that you would buy for your home audio system. Take away that box and you get alot less thump and alot of strange air like sounds from the movement of the subs. The bass is lost from opening the trunk and having that lovable thump dissappear because its big trunk of a sub box is gone and the sound waves have nowhere to go but outside the trunk thus less bass.
I hope I got that right, I'm not into alot of car audio "but" I am very skilled at home audio and how things work. A cool experement to prove my point is fooling around with the placement of your home audio speakers. Put the sub in the corner of a room and it has more bass, same goes for the other speakers you have.

Well as long as everyone is talkin bout their subs, I have a question about mine. I had two 12" infinity kappa dvc and man did they pound. I really have to say that im obsessed with jl and infinity, but infinity can really hit hard. Anyways I decided to buy another 12" infinity dvc so now im thinkin about the box measurements. Its got me really wondering, I don't want the box any farther out then 18" from the back of the seat because then its too close to the back of the trunk. Anyone have a tribox in their grand am and have measurements? I just want it to sound even louder then before and want everything perfect.
P.S. bass is more addictive then drugs, well for me anyways and its more expensive.

If you're willing to go 18" out from the seat, you should have no problem. The Kappa DVC's should work fine in 1.5 ft^3 each, wich would be 36 x 18 x 12 interior dimensions. Figre you make the box out of 3/4" MDF, build it 38 x 15 x 18 and you have left plenty of space inside for bracing and the drivers themselves.
A ported box would be too big for 3 of them.
Assuming that they are dual 4 ohm coils, you wie them series/paralell, and get a 2.66 ohm load. What kind of amp are you using? Many common 2 ch amps would have a hard time bridging to that load, and most monoblocks would drive it OK - but not at full power. Just keep that in mind....
Do you have the Infinity Kappa "perfect" (large rubber surrond with a white cone sub), or the Kappa's(green sub cone)?
The 12 inch Kappa perfects down right kick a** (well both do, I would rather have Infinities the JL's but thats my personal choice) and can handle 1400 watts rms "not" peak watts. Plus you can have a small custom box and they still pound out hard. (just don't use QLogic boxes or the Kappa's will rip them apart, to wimply made)
Is wimply a word?:p

lol - Not rippingon the Perfects, they rock - but I bet if I put 1400 real RMS watts to one, it'd die a pretty horrible death. :p

Yeah, I have 2 perfects. It clearly says on the back 350 watts RMS, 1400 watts max. I did'nt know Kappas and Perfects were different colors, they both have CMMD cones. I do know Perfects will pound pretty good and have much better than decent SQ. Very happy with mine. You should be able to fit two in the spare tire well easy, as they require little airspace.
there are actually three different Infinity subs, you have the best of the three.
Reference: el' kindo cheapo econo but still goodo'
Kappa: better
Perfect: best
Duh, my bad about the specs. Man, I use to do car audio for a very short time(was better for home audio stuff), I should know this crap better. I've installed a ton of crap, thats why I know not to use the crappy QLogic boxes because so many people came to the place asking what the hell happened to thier box.
350 for power range RMS(amp) and 1400 peak.

thank you AmIGrand, I have the step down from the perfects mine are still the same color as the perfects but handle 1200 watts a piece instead of 1400 as for my amp its the new 850 planet audio class D and it basically does 850 which is good for now because with only two of my infinity's it could beat out tons of others with 15's or 3 12's. My amp is a mono channel and I know if I hooked all 3 up It wouldn't be even close to its potential or even do me much good, thats why i'll be getting another amp soon to use for one of them. Thank you everyone for your help and comments. Someday i'll get my spl and tell ya, next time their is a comp here.
