Ok, some :rage: cleared out RS of all the bright LED's tonight, and al I have sittin around my collection is blue, so only 1 diff color for now. Gonna try and score green, red, and yellow LEDs when I get the chance.
The pics on the left were taken with the auto setting on the cam, on the right I adjusted the shutter speed a bit
First pic... this is what comes stock

Switched the white LED's with blue ones.
Gonna get red, red + blue, green, and whatever combo i can find

No... Used the stock rubber piece that the LEDs fit on... new LED's and new resistor.

Yep... right now the "stock" resistor in those angel eyes is 240 ohm.. and it seems to play nice with regular old Blue LEDs from radio shack (5mm, 3.7 volt, 20mA, P/N # 276-316)

For those that are impatient.. A little how to..
First of all... You'll want to find the LEDs you want...
Important ## -- the mcd value, that is the brightness. Higher the mcd, higher the brightness. You have to take viewing angles into acount too... for instance a 10000mcd @ 15 degree viewing angle is like a 5000mcd @ 30 degrees. The size is 5mm.
If you don't have an electronics shop around you, try sites that sell 5mm LEDs like www.case-mod.com
Once you have your LEDs, you'll have these values:
Forward Voltage (anywhere from 1-4)
Current (in mA)
Hit up the resistor calculator, one is located here: http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/led.htm
To be safe about your supply voltage.. Technically you should use 13.8 volts which is what the car usually outputs while on. Fill in the rest of the info, hit calculate, go get your resistor. the stock resistor that comes with the angel eyes is 240 ohms.
Yank/cut out the stock led's as shown in gurus pic above, bend the pins of the new ones like the stock (you'll see when you take em out).... solder up.. good to go.
edit: I just found a site with lots of colors and high intensity LEDs, I'm gonna get some of each, and try em out... Stay tuned, gonna have to wait a few days for them to come in. I do have pics of red tho, will take them later when it is dark

FYI _ I got LED's the super bright ones, with resistors, from www.oznium.com. Phil has a lot of that stuff, I paid 3.99 each for LED and resistors.

Ok, Seth or someone. I like these fogs and all, but I'm not a wiring person at all. So if I got these, I'd have red LED's I think. But, can I wire these into my stock switch like you can wire the blazertechs? I figure if I wired them into the switch, it'd be halo and fog on at the same time all the time. I'd need to run an extra switch to do halo's only I guess. But if I was going to try to keep my stock switch, halo and fog on at the same time, can it be done?

Like I said I ahve much brighter LEDs on the way, but these will give you guys some ideas for now.

it can be done, but I don't know for sure how long it will last. check out the install instructions on the Mods page for more info.

Yeah well unless you want a tan or funny eye stuff don't look at em! Youll never be close enough to do damage when they are on the car, plus the leds are aimed "around" the ring, if that make sense...
So far I've had these on a 13.8v power supply with the stock resistor that came with the lights (240 or 270 ohm if I remember, I posted above).. they still goin strong.. But I take no responsibility with whatever you do, so don't complain if the LEDs burn up :)

Seth,
Those look great, thanks for all the work to show us how those look! Also, does your professional opinion guess that they will work fine with the current resistors?
iceman
03-03-2003, 10:45 PM
Well according to the LED specs, the yellow ones would need the largest resistor (600ohms? I don't have the paper in front of me). I've left them on for the past hour or two and they still goin fine.. So yeah I guess you could wing it with the resistors that come with the lights.
You can get away with lower value resistors when the leds are in series, but this way, they are in paralell... Honestly it's been a while and I forget my electronics so someone that knows what they are talkin about, feel free to chime in :)
Also my power supply is 13.8V, the car puts out max 14.4 ish... At night my car floats around 14.. I just put a disclaimer so people are aware.

And here is with replacement LEDs in the little boot. You'll have to solder so that the solder points are inside the grey rubber. Line up your new leds, bend the pins so they are 90degrees with the LED, just like the stock ones. Make sure your positives are on the same side as each other (longer leads) and your negatives are on the same side (shorter leads).

iceman: yeah so I'm bored, started trying 2 diff color LEDs at once..
Yeah, I know how that could be. But if you guys want a real cool visual using those bright LED's in the Angel eyes, AND if you are technically-educated, you can build a real simple circuit which fades two different pairs of LED's into each other thus changing the colors. You can put this circuit somewhere in the front of your car (away from the elements, probably in a case or something). This IC will fade two pairs of LED's ex: two Blue and two White LED's into each other. So say when the white LED's are on, the blue will be turned off. As the IC Chip allows, the white LED's that were currently on will beging to "fade" or dim as the blue LED's beging to "fade in" or dim-up. As the white LED's "fade" out, the Blue LED's will now be visual and the white LED's will be out completely. This will go on and on while current is supplied to the circuit. So Imagine: you have the Angel eye fog lights. You add this circuit to them and you will see your fog lights change colors as your LED's fade in and out of each other reavealing a different color. The circuit is shown in the link I'm about to show. You can control the "fading" speed by +/- the value of the capacitors. You can choose the colors you want. So if you want blue, white, red, green etc., you have full control. I myselft have not tried this yet, but I am working on this circuit for a licence plate outline.( I am making one where the LED's fade around a plex-glass piece so that they change. Kinda like neon around the plate, but changing colors) If you have detailed questions about this circiut, please post. Oh, and sorry sooooo long.......

thats awesome! but there is only room for 2 LED's in the fog, so it wouldnt be much use, but could be used somewhere else, i might use this to do a color fade in my vents! Thanks for the idea and diagram, ill have to get out my trusty breadboard...:)

Well, I honestley havent seen the inside of the the Angel eyes, but that's where enginuity begins. I have thought about actually doing this to my GA. I'm pretty sure there could be room for more than two LED's, but if not, I think I got around using only two LED's rather than two pairs of LED's (dont know if that makes sense) by using a 62-ohm resistor tied to ground or (-) of the LED. I will have to look at my breadboard......hehe. :D The LM324 chip can handle a voltage of up to 32VDC. I personally think it works better by applying 9VDC. You can accomplish this by using a 7809 voltage regulator and apply it to your cars voltage. ( A heat sink might be nessecary, but it depends on your 7809 specs)
This circuit is very versitle and can be used anywhere as long as there is current. That would look tight in your vents! If you do it, post some pics!

You could wire both the eyes and the main lamp to the same switch but you wouldn't notice the eyes part because the mains are so bright. Some people wire the eyes to the parking lamps, I wired the eyes to the fog light switch. I then wired the mains to the high beams since the Angel Eyes light are actually driving lights. With this set up, the eyes are on with the low beams and the mains come on with the high beams. I took a wire from the high beam lamp, ran it thru a switch that fires the supplied relay to power the lights.

They just pop out by pulling on the grey boot on the back of the housing. Just be careful and edge it out a little at a time so you don't damage the wiring.

Just as an advanced warning for all you fellow light enthusiasts...I got pulled over with my underbody leds, cabin leds, and my angel eyes all turned on. They are all red, and the cop wrote me a ticket for just the angel eyes, nothing in front of the front wheels can be red he said. He told me that the underbodies and inside lights weren't what got me in trouble, so be aware that changing the color of these lights works the same as any turn signal or parking lights...only white or amber. Maybe the laws are different in other states, but don't say i didn't warn you!

Teh stock angle eyes I bought on PFYC ..LEDS Look some what purple. I'm considering changing them to the White RL5's. Is it a big diference? How difficult are they to change on a scale of 1 to 5?
StephenM
10-11-2004, 08:06 AM
Not sure about how big of a difference it would be, but the difficulty changing depends on your skill. They have to be sautered (spelling??) on, in which case I had to have a friend do it. The LED's are easy enough to get to and you can pull the wires out to make it easier to work with.

there are 3 color led's out there, i got 50 of them off ebay, it might be fun to mess w/ them.. you could put them each on a toggle switch, a blue light up switch for all blue, a green light up switch for the green and a red switch for the red, then play w/ them and mix the colors, like red and blue on to get purple, all 3 one to get white, ect.. they are rather nice, they are basicly 3 led's in one.. i was gonna use them in my guage needle mod but didnt realy have the extreme brightness needed to light those bad boys up, but angel eyes should be eaiser...
also, autozone has those color changiing ones that have the 3 micro led's in them along w/ a circuit board so they change color and patterns and what not, they are 5mm, and everything is all built in, resistor and all, all ya gotta do is give them +12 and ground, that would creat a cool effect...
in my opinoin, light mods should be for parkin lot pimping only, unless it obeys the amber/white front, red rear, if you have any other color on, you deserve a ticket! thats just common sense, not hating, but seriously. keep the pimping to the parking lots unless its legal colors.. but in all honesty, if your gonna go w/ white angel eyes, then i would go w/ the cold cathodes, insanely bright and look 100% even, not brighter at top... but w/ that, you pay the price....

Nice of Hella to stick their name on a shiat product. If i bought these lights the first thing i would switch out is the LED's to some good ones. Don't forget when you switch LED's you have to get diffrent resistors. Yes you will have to solder and use heat shrink.

LED's are known for a long life as long as the voltage stays in the operating range. I'm thinking that with all the failures of the Angel Eye LEDs, the voltage to the lights is too high. This will make the lamp the brightest but will shorten it's life.
The Angel eyes LEDs are wired in parallel and have one resistor. When I replaced my lamps, I used the original resistor with new lamps.
There is not a lot of room to use two separate resistors and they would have to be insulated from each other. The common ground would still be used.

I know this is an old thread but I have a question, I went to kragen and they had this funky looking 3157 bulbs, it's like a pod with a bunch of LED on top and then the normal 3157 connection in the back... supposedly they are bright as hell, and my question is if I get this, can I put them in the center turn signals and not get pulled over? I already have a set of PIIAA 90007 bulbs on the head lights, however I want to achieve a clear look in front, I also got these super white 194 bulbs... is this a ticket in the making or am I good to go? and will this LED pod give me problems with the electrical or is it like it says, plug on original socket and have fun?
