gt's top speed

At my local track last year my gt governed out at 125. I heard of a chip that fixes this, where would i find it, and which make is the best. I learned that you cant just "take out the governor" so what would fix this.

do you really want to die in a grand am ?

xbomb 03-07-2005 07:18 AM

of course not, thats why i do it on the track

carpediem1230 03-07-2005 07:44 AM

do a search for DHP.

lucky13rme 03-07-2005 07:44 AM

here's six letters you should be able to find the info you need from "searching" for them.
ASE, DHP

i swear i had mine up to 130 once

I tell ya.....there isn't much room above 125........HP is the limiting factor. I would say with all the bolt ons and no limiter....you MAY be able to crack 130. Anything more than that will take a decent power adder.

Ok, I have something to bring up here. Where IS the car governed at? What REAL speed. At 100+ the speedo is inacurate. Like, the computer governs the car at probably 120mph, but some here claim to get upto 130mph stock. I think if you hook a laptop and check out what its governed at, your car NEVER really goes past this, unless you are going down hill...but even then.

And top speed...what does it matter? Acceleration, shift points, 1/4 times, and auto-x times is what really matters.

xbomb 03-07-2005 09:37 AM

all the cars are "supposed" to be governed at the same speed, but for some unknown reason some govern out 3 mph faster.

Here in Las Vegas(because of the altitude which isn't THAT high, but markedly more than sea level)...my 03' won't even hit the limiter....it doesn't have the power to. It runs out of steam just north of 120....all I've got is the K&N Filtercharger. Even with a slight downgrade....my limiter hasnt been an issue. Time for more mods I guess... :)

As long as you have stock tires with correct air pressure in them the speedo accuracy is just fine at high speeds. GT's are speed limited at 130mph in stock form. Most don't have the horse power to get that fast though unless they have a good smooth stretch of road and no head wind. I tested my car with just a filter and exhaust on the freeway and the governor kick in at exactly 130mph. It was straight and slightly downhill so it coasted to 132 then slowed to 126 before the fuel came back on. After the PCM re-program, supercharger, suspension mods, etc I've hit 142 mph. These cars aren't very aerodynamic so it's hard to go faster than that. You need a lot of horsepower, and better tires, brakes, and suspension mods to do so safely. Even then the car feels light at that speed. I don't recommend doing this on public roads, but I know people will anyway. If you're gonna do it at least make sure your car can handle it.

[b] I hit 128MPH in my 2001GAGT when it was stock off the lot and still had about 3 or 4 grand on the tac. then I decided to slow down before i got airborne over a bump.

sc02grandam 03-07-2005 11:50 AM

mine is limited to 180kph (111mph) :(

Panacea 03-07-2005 12:27 PM

I hit between 128-132mph. My speedo's off (because of my gauges) by 2mph it read 130. So, with other innacuracies I may have only been going 125.

When I had first got my car and got it up to 130 the fuel cut off. So I think they are accurate. I guess it depends on conditions.

what track do you go that you can hit 120+ on? :iconfused

xbomb 03-08-2005 09:32 AM

watkins glen international. If anyone is familiar with this track, coming on to the back straightaway at 80+ 125 is very attainable.

atc3434 03-08-2005 09:37 AM

How do you get out on Watkins Glen? I'd love to run a few laps around that track, its not too far from home for me either!

zytherian 03-08-2005 10:24 AM

SR 124 in northeastern indiana traveling west-bound from SR 9 toward SR 15. there is aproximately a 15 mile stretch of wide open flat highway through the country that has very little traffic or there is a Rural Route 218 approximately 10 miles south of there that has similar characteristics, however there is a hill on RR218 that is aptly named SH!T Hill because that one of 2 possible words that come out of your mouth while going over the hill at anywhere above 80 mph. At 70 mph my GAGT caught air under all 4 tires. it amost feels like the road gets ripped out from under your car.... i wouldnt suggest hitting it above 90mph if you want to keep your car.
