Replaced mine at 80,000 miles

mekaleka 09-28-2004 01:47 PM

The dealership called...

The car is in (14,731 miles) for the 15,000 miles service and to repair the dimpled trim...the service guy called and said they'd have to keep it overnight to replace the lower intake manifold gasket. <sigh> They should just list it as a maintenance item.

wade walter 09-28-2004 02:51 PM

did it around 65k, and after that visit to the dealer it seems all the problems started occuring..sad to say i don't trust any of those beotches.

iceman1793 09-28-2004 05:17 PM

I did mine last week at 62, 000 miles.

Had mine replaced at 4k ... isnt that gay? 4,000 miles ... not even two oil changes.

NorKoastal 09-29-2004 12:13 PM

26000 miles 2000GT made in Lansing.... Lil seepage on the outside, no oil or coolant light (except when I mixed too much water in coolant and it overflowed for a week)....(fixed and no problems since) oil looks great (Im changing it on my own from now on) Lil peanut butter under the overflow tank but after being wiped off looks good... Another question is the temp that these cars sit in.. I live in CA where temp ranges from 40-105... Most of you guys seem to be in places that go from freezing to moderate to hot... I would think that could also play a role in the amount of issues... (Just like the Hazard light recall)

Component Service Coverage

I contacted Pontiac after the repairs were made to correct my intake manifold leak at just shy of 15,000 miles. After explaining my concerns, and my desire to keep the Grand Am for several years, they issued a Component Service Coverage letter which indicates they "will make repairs to correct defects related to materials or workmanship occurring during the coverage period" related to the engine. This service coverage is extended to 5 years or 60,000 miles from date of in-service. Not sure if it's worth the paper it's written on, but I would definitely recommend you contact Pontiac and try to get some reassurance. 800-762-2737.

New Update!

At 84500 KM I had the LIM gasket changed.

Now at 95000 KM my car is back in the shop for the Head Gasket! Fortunately I have a warrenty to cover powertrain, including gaskets and seals.

Also my SES tripped, engine sputtering at high speed, high idle...All because my Fuel Filter has clogged full. I bought this car at 82900 KMS, and its very obvious that the previous owner did not take care of this car.

I think I will take my car in for the transmission flush very soon. Get a new filter, and clean fluid.

IMICEMAN 10-19-2004 10:59 AM

Well here we go again !
Replaced LIM gasket at 55,000 Km (Jan'04)
Now will have to do it again at 66,000 Km (Oct'04)

This is ridiculous !
How can the original gasket last all the way to 55,000 Km with no problems, and then the replacement lasts only 11,000 Km ?!

BTW, my warranty expired @ 60,000 Km. I spoke to the service rep and outlined the fact that it was under a year since the last repair for the same LIM problem. He said that the 1yr warranty on service work applied only when you "pay" for the repair and that having in done originally under "warranty" did not count.
I insisted that he talk to the manager about it.
When he got back he said that the manager told him that they would honor it and do it for free.
I am not sure what scent of BS they were shovelling, but as long as I don't have to pay, I am ok with it.

BTW, does anyone here know exactly what "causes" the LIM problem ?
Is it by driving the car hard and fast ?
I have noticed that certain people on here have replaced their LIM at different intervals and I was wondering if it had to do with driving style or not.
(I drive my car HARD).

Its just a defective gasket/ The gasket itself is plastic and it cracks after a wile, if it was done recently (within the last year) the revised gasked should have been used. I'm thinking it was a shoddy install.

Just had my intake gasket replaced 2 months ago (1999 SE2 V6 67,000 miles). Since then, I have also replaced my water pump, radiator, radiator cap(2x) and I am replacing my thermostat and hoses today.

consider it a yearly pm... :( does this mean your getting quicker at doing it??? I had it down to about 3hr

andrewe77 12-27-2004 11:21 AM

Count me in with a 2000 GT at about 68,500 miles. My water pump was also leaking so it's being replaced. All of it is under extended warranty thank God.

GrahamKracka 12-27-2004 11:25 AM

had mine recently.....mine almost at 38000

redramair01 12-27-2004 11:29 AM

I think mine was done under warranty around 27K before I got the car. I had the dealership run a history on it.

1/2dolla 12-27-2004 06:37 PM

Yeah, I love the car but its getting too expensive to drive. Now the Power sterring pump is starting to leak, the replacement at the dealer is nearly $400 because it uses the variable assit unit. The non is $150. bleh This maybe the last straw as far as the next car not being GM.

sqdman12 12-28-2004 06:02 PM

Have it now 200 61000 miles

grandam-wpg 12-28-2004 07:26 PM

2001 / 53437 Miles (about 3 months ago).

Draug 12-30-2004 03:07 AM

Yep, just finished fixing mine tonight. It failed at 182,000 Kms.

I am the second owner, and 'dont think' it was done before - nothing looked like it had ever been touched.

With the uneveness of the original machining on the head and intake surfaces, it is a miracle the gasket lasted this long. After my TLC to these surfaces, I have a feeling it will last much longer this time.

Dexman1349 12-30-2004 07:15 AM

I have the leak for the second time.

#1 - 62,000 miles
#2 - 125,000 miles

Slim 12-30-2004 07:18 AM

Count me in... Just noticed mine starting to leak on Christmas eve.

VaGT 12-30-2004 09:21 AM

I'm board, so I put the data in a spreadsheet.

So far, roughly 131 posts have been about their car, or a close relative having the problem, which includes the multiple cases. I generally only counted them if some data was posted, year or miles.

Average miles: 51,559

b0uncingbubbles 01-01-2005 11:30 AM

mine's currently leaking. '95 gagt w/ 152,000ish miles. it's getting a new home at the junk yard tuesday. new car for me. :woowoo

matthar924 01-09-2005 08:38 PM

Had the UIM done at 66,000 Miles or so. Took it to the mechanic, but it was still covered under the extended warranty. I think my low coolant light came on and I really didnt' expect it to be the gasket...back in 2000. I just added more coolant mix. Then came some leaking from the top of the exhaust manifold area. Hopefully it's just the crummy gaskets GM uses and any internal engine problems causing everyone's gaskets to go up. Never had coolant in the oil though.

justinshook 01-11-2005 12:50 AM

I'm at 70k, no problem for me so far... *knock on wood*

Azrael 01-11-2005 05:06 PM

Had it last week at approx. 78,000 miles. Virtually no symptoms other than no heat in the car. Thankfully it was only an external leak.

Passn'U 01-11-2005 05:31 PM

omfg
will this thread ever die?

dsk727 01-11-2005 06:54 PM

haha probably not since it is an ongoing problem!!! lol

and mine started leaking around 30,000 miles had it replaced just before warranty went out around 34,000 miles. Hoping it doesn't go again before I get rid of the car later this year.

GrahamKracka 01-11-2005 07:06 PM

i havent heard of any of them failing with the new style gasket

98GrandAmSE 01-12-2005 02:03 PM

^^^^ My moms 02 GP was recalled a a year or so back to put the updated gasket on. She got the leak last week with 19k miles on it

mariogt99 01-20-2005 05:34 PM

I have 160,000 kms on mine 99 gt ,and was driving with leaking intake for more than a year . Finally the engine overheated ,and i blew one of the cylinder head gasket - so $400 job escalated into $1.300 (including a full tuneup) . Word of advice - don`t wait `till you`ll get coolant in your engine (like me) . spend some cash , and fix it ahead of time...

nd4spd 01-20-2005 06:21 PM

ahhh sob, tried to wait 120,000 and it was leaking externally, now I noticed coolant in my oil WQ$#$#.

john_ertw 01-22-2005 02:33 PM

I think that I'm leaking for the second time. I just checked the oil today and found that white stuff under the oil cap. The first time was at 45,000km (in May 2004). Now I'm at 75,000km (Jan 2005). This really ****es me off. The first time it was covered under warranty. I have to see what happens this time.

Oh, our 1999 Olds Silhouette minivan with the same engine had the leak at around 40,000km as well. I also know two others that have this engine and both have had a leak. I am convinced the leak is guaranteed with this engine. It's just a matter of when.

BlackGT4ya01 01-29-2005 10:44 PM

Check this out something happend i thought never happen to my car i have 31,000 miles on car my warranty is over i didnt get extended warranty cause they said borla would void warranty so got mad and cancel it..ok now the probleim i went to a bench mechanic he gave me a quote... Azrael 01-30-2005 08:25 AM
