help with making SC/T hood functional

i've searched through the forums on here for instructions to make this hood (SC/T Ram Air) functional, http://www.pfyc.com/store/merchant.m...ory_Code=GAEXT

but people never include what exactly they had done to make the hood functional.... Some have just posted images of it, or just suggested "limited" information using certain products to do it. and as i take it, there are several ways to make this hood functional.....I'm just basically looking for the most effective way to make it functional, rather than an easy way......

If someone would at least give me a short break down on how to make the hood functional, it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be 100% that im doing this right....thank you to all!!!

here's some pics of my car, http://www.jmwallace.net/John/Jasons...y_new_baby.htm this is when i purchased it four months ago....its had a few face lifts since i've taken those pictures.... im gonna update this site once i have the sct hood on.

koolZ71 07-24-2003 12:31 AM

well u cant make it functional..the closest you would get is to get a WAI for ur car

Kdawg207 07-24-2003 08:16 AM

not true...

There is a guy on here somewhere that did it and posted some bad shots of it.

i am workin on mine right now.

I should be done soon

buffbison 07-24-2003 08:36 AM

once your done, and it looks like its gonna work, would you be able to send me some instructions how you've made yours functional? and any other tips you can offer to me....

thanks

as you can see, i have a 00' ga se1.

RedGrandTour 07-24-2003 08:52 AM

I've been thinking about this lately. Couldn't we just connect the nostrils directly to the Ram Air box? This way we wouldn't have to worry about water because the Ram Air filters out water on its own. Also maybe a custom fit plastic from the nostrils to the Ram Air.

Doesn't the Ram Air filter out water? If we go threw the Ram Air box that solves it?

Jagey 07-24-2003 09:07 AM

Ram air doesn't filter anything. If you cut out a hole in the top of the airbox with a regular filter in there, you will get a direct shot of filth and water in the intake. If you cut a hole in the top of a box that contains a cone filter, you will be drenching the cone with high speed water all the time. I don't understand how a functional hood can be made properly.

buffbison 07-24-2003 09:23 AM

yep sure is cool!!! there aren't very many ga enthusiasts around here.... so maybe we can meet up sometime..

Well, im still just figuring out a way to make it functional (with your guy's help), and keeping the water out.

koolZ71 07-24-2003 09:28 AM

well id be glad to try to help ya out sometime...when i had my hood, i just took the vents out, and just let the air cool the engine, cause i couldnt find any safe way to do it without getting the cone clogged with debri or water, but look me up sometime, i usually cruise around greenville...anyways u gotta PM:)

wait till the track day photos from milan. GM made one functional :D

kamikaz16 07-25-2003 06:05 AM

How about...

You run piping from the hood to the airbox, as you would to make the hood functional. But along that piping somewhere, make a 1-2 inch "ditch" in the pipe. Any water/dirt that made its way into the piping will collect here, and you can just clean it out as necessary. Shouldn't really affect the airflow that much.

update...i've decided to order the hood the first week of august. my dad says he knows how to keep the water out.... SO....if his idea works (as he knows it will), i will post the how to on here.

AND....im not kidding...but once i've got the car paid off (hopefully by december), im gonna seriously think about getting that supercharger OR see if i can put in a bigger engine and trans... cause my dad works for advance auto, and they can order performance engines....and with him working there, i can use his discount, which is 20%.... so....i cannot wait!!! well, thats it for now.. ya'll have a good one.

another question about the hood.... Should i install the hood on before painting and so forth so it can expand, or will it be okay paint it once i get it? i know some of the types of fiberglass hoods you must do this in order for a perfect fit.

thanks

You can paint it right away, there won't be a problem dude

Joey K 07-29-2003 05:04 PM

Fiberglass does not expand at all. Also, all you have to do for drainage is put 2 or 3 small drain holes towards the front of the air tunnel, as far to the front as the tunnel goes. Since there's a natural slope at the front, the water will want to collect there anyways. As for being able to clean it out (Someone keeps freaking over getting birds in the intake on on of these GA sites) Just cut an access hole or 2 in the tunnel & make a plate to screw over your opening. Make a gasket so it is airtight & whenever you feel the need to clean all you'll have to do is unscrew your access plate & clean till your satisfied. (& then of course, put the plate back on) Another note, as many of you already have figured out I'm sure - You can't run your intake air through the top of the stock filter setup. You'll have to modify for a cone filted in the stock airbox. I'm makeing a functional Warbird hood. Whenever I get time to complete it I'll post pics so others can get ideas. it may not be the exact same as a ready made hood, but the same principles will apply.

buffbison 08-09-2003 09:35 PM

okay, ordering the hood either tomorrow or monday....has anyone figured out a way to keep the water out? my dad still thinks he knows a way, but i wanna know all other options before we get started on it......thanks..

eric99gt 08-10-2003 05:15 AM

don't worry about water....it's not a problem.

buffbison 08-10-2003 07:32 AM

andy body kits

okay, i have question about body kits. I've thought about buying the back bumper kit from here, http://www.andysautosport.com/pontia...ndamkator.html

and if anyone has these body kits from andy, would it look stupid if i had just the bumper installed (due to the contour of the lines on the 00 grand am SE.)? cause i only like the bumber there, and dont want the whole body kit.....

-OR-

i also would like the back end skirt from pfyc, http://www.pfyc.com/store/merchant.m...ory_Code=GAEXT

they state some of the skirts won't fit on the se, but some will...was just wondering if anyone has tried to put on the back skirt on a 99+ SE, and it installed just fine?

thanks

You'll never keep water out of a functional hood. But you can always drian it before it gets to your airfilter.

aaron 08-10-2003 08:03 PM

If you're so passionate about having a functional hood, why don't you just make it so that you can have a quick connect / disconnect so if it does rain you can just disconnect it, and once the rain has stopped, hook it right back up. That's only if you absolutely can't figure out anything else.

No need to, just put drain holes in your hood under the front. The water naturally flows there because of the slope to the front. It's worked many times before & I'm makeing another one the same way right now as a matter a fact. It'll hopefully be done inna week or so/ time permitting.

Cone filter K&N number SD Hood

I plan on modifying the stock air box by cutting open the top of the box and mating it to the hood with a foam rubber gasket. I also plan on installing a cone filter in the air box. I measured the inside diameter of the flange at 3 1/2 inches. It would appear that you would need a cone filter with a 10 or 20 degree angle so it would fit totally in the box. I was wondering if anybody has sucessfully setup their SD ram air hood like this and what K&N filter did they install. please provide the K&N part number.
Thanks Ru4crzn 2000 GAGT

eric99gt 11-18-2003 09:51 AM

i've done it by i have no clue what size filter i ended up using. It was definately a tight fit though.

Ru4crzn 11-18-2003 10:02 AM

I believe the filter number is stamped on the filter. Can you look?
Thanks again

buffbison 11-18-2003 10:45 AM

i used kn filter

RB-0900

eric99gt 11-18-2003 11:42 AM

looks like he got it for ya. good luck with the install.

Ru4crzn 11-18-2003 11:59 AM

Rb-900 sure looks like the one. did it make any difference that this filter is 3 inches and the opening, if i measured correctly, is 3.5 inches?
