yup - B-School is tops in the nation... thats all I'm worried about now. Tough as hell to get in to - thank god I had good grades/GMAT test scores/a family full of alumni/ so basically everything going for me!
Congrats if you're already in. If you're going to be entering as a freshman - be prepared to sacrifice any social life you once had, cuz the minute you step foot into the b-school thats out the window.

xxbackhillxx 01-09-2005 04:37 PM

ha sorry i deleted the post. ive searched a few different engines and came up with a few different lists. i dont remember which resource i had, but it seemed fairly credible.

i've gotten into u of m in general. not really their business school. i still might go to msu for the reason you just stated ... no social life at u of m. my grandparents are longtime friends with the parents of the dean of business at u of m dearborn. i think i have a good shot of getting into the graduate school for my masters when i get there.

in another route, msu offers a little better program where you do a dual major in engineering and business in which after 5 years, instead of the normal 4, you receive your mba in both engineering and business as an undergrad. MSU is 27-30th in the nation for business and idk where they stand in engineering. i figure as a 22 yr old with a masters in engineering and business, it'll be slightly easier to find a job in today's economy.

i went to Oakland and the program was pretty good...it's rated on par with MSU. i'm not sure how well it's rated but i'm doing well for myself either way :boogie: goin back for my master's now too heh

xxbackhillxx 01-09-2005 05:21 PM

jason ... is your company or employer paying for you to go back for a masters? or are you doing it out of your pocket?

Warthog 01-09-2005 05:26 PM

yes general dynamics covers all tuition and fees minus books...otherwise i wouldn't go back. saves a TON of $ heh

xxbackhillxx 01-09-2005 05:33 PM

now thats good stuff.

my cousin graduated from state with a bachelors in business and was immediately employed by NASA. NASA picked up the tab on the rest of the loans he had to pay off as an undergrad there. he kept kicking himself because he didnt have very much left to pay, maybe 200-300 dollars.

i think he's going through texas for his mba right now. eveyrthing is covered by the gov't.

i want a gov't job :(

Warthog 01-09-2005 05:37 PM

mine's govt. contractor, so it's similar...i like it :)

haha go work for the post office for a few months. would that even count?

notsoaveragej0e 01-11-2005 06:59 AM

hey tom (xxbackhillxx) when did you apply to U of M, and when did you get accepted?

I applied around October 20th, and havent heard back yet... No news is good news, i guess?

PS - I'm thinking i might go into Mechanical Engineering, and i read that u of m is number 2 in the nation as far as the engineering school goes... I also got accepted to State and Kettering so let me know what you guys think about both State's and Kettering's engineering programs... (i would think Kettering would have the better engineering school, because it was formerly GMI, and is focused around engineernig...?)

thanks!

GoBlue30 01-11-2005 08:41 AM

if you haven't heard back from U of M - you may have been wait listed, not 100% sure though. I have a few friends who were in the mechanical engineering program at U of M - its really good, but also really tough. I have no idea about State or Kettering..

Nikki 01-11-2005 08:44 AM

I have a few friends that attend Kettering, or have graduated there and have heard really good things. The ones I know that have graduated from there are all working very good jobs at big companies.

GoBlue30 01-11-2005 09:25 AM

If you are 100% sure you want to go into ME and you aren't gonna change after being in it for a year, I'd almost say go to Kettering over U of M/State. However, if you have some doubt in your mind doin't go, it'd suck to go there, find out that engineering of any form isn't what you like only to be stuck at an engineering school.

xxbackhillxx 01-11-2005 10:51 AM

i applied around mid october. if you were put on the wait list ... just as many of my friends have been, you would still be notified. i put mechanical engineering when i applied to all my colleges ... but then i learned about the business/engineering program offered at state. i honestly dont know where im going.

notsoaveragej0e 01-11-2005 10:19 PM

I called U of M admissions office today... yeah they said they "havent made a decision yet"... I was wrestling with State or Kettering or UofM ME programs... I talked to my dad and he said that Kettering has a heavy automotive focus (which makes sense...formerly GMI), and that guys hes worked with that have gone there are really focused on automotive things and not...like..."engineering in general". And like GoBlue30 said, if i end up not liking the ME program, i can still get outta State or U of M with a very respectable Business degree- the only question now is how hard i want to break my balls, and if i can handle calculus 5 ( :vomit: )

For people who know about Kettering, whats the girl to guy ratio?

For people who are taking/have taken State or U of M ME programs, what do/did you think of the math? (im an A average math student taking pre-calc now, but math doesnt excite me)

I'm a lil interested in this dual business/engineering major you mentioned, Tom.. I may look into this...

college is easy, getting in and making decisions is the hard part... :ec:

thanks guys

not good at all i got to partys there all the time... there not to many good looking girls at the school. But the partys are very good! lol

xxbackhillxx 01-12-2005 04:05 AM

calc 5 shouldnt be all that bad. im enrolling in calc 4 next semester at oakland to get some of it out of the way.

GoBlue30 01-12-2005 09:26 AM

i was in the engineering school undergrad - not ME - computer science which was in the EECS deparment (electrical engineering and computer science). Those classes were chopped full of math, which as long as you did your work, weren't afraid to seek help if you didn't fully understand something... they weren't bad at all. You'll do fine..
Plus, like I said before, if you go to State or U of M, find out ME isn't for you, there are hundreds of other degree programs that you can get in to

ndprunner22 01-12-2005 10:10 AM

Hey i just wanted to say sorry for being a **** to guys like xxbackhillxx and sctgrandam
i was in a bad mood
sorry guys i can be a ******* sorry

thanks for your help
steve

notsoaveragej0e 01-12-2005 10:10 AM

thanks for the input Goblue30!

xxbackhillxx - are you taking like... AP calc right now? Someone told me that calc at OU is uber-hard... I was thinking about taking calc this summer at OU also, but wasnt sure how difficult it would be... i dont know

-Joe-

xxbackhillxx 01-12-2005 12:49 PM

im a year ahead of even the ap calc students right now. i finished ap calc last year as a junior. i dont have a math this year in school because there is nothing above ap calc. calc 4 is the next step for me ... but i opted not to take it in the fall and im kicking myself for it now. i have another friend who took it and said it isnt that hard. like goblue stated ... as long as you're not afriad to ask questions you should be ok.

Warthog 01-12-2005 01:17 PM

OU is notorious for ****ty calc classes...and for good reason. If you think OU is like Macomb, to take a breather in your summer classes, think again. A majority of the reason is the teachers...they blow. I actually had good ones for Discrete Math and Linear Algebra, but they're all bad for Calc.

Also Tom, I'm not so sure they're going to let you take what you want without passing the AP test. I passed and even then I could only start with Calc 2. OU's math goes like this:

Calc 1, Calc 2, Advanced Calc 1, Advanced Calc 2 (300-levels mostly for math majors), and Differential Equations. To think you can just go ahead and register for Adv. Calc 2 (Calc 4 as you put it), I don't think you're going to be allowed. And I've never heard of Calc 5 lol

xxbackhillxx 01-12-2005 04:58 PM

i passed the ap test with a 5. my friend who was the other junior with me last year in ap calc somehow got into calc 4 at OU. if he can, then i can ... right?

notsoaveragej0e 01-12-2005 05:22 PM

i think i just found my calc tutor if i struggle with calc at State...

:ec:

DaytonaPrixMI 01-12-2005 06:49 PM

you might want to ask your buddy if he was forced to take placement test when he was there. Because they do not let you skip out on much. I did the AP thing for english and they let me out of one class which sucked.

As for the math program, Jason is right it blows. I just went to OCC and took my math classes because they were pass fail. Plus the teachers over there can put into normal english so you can understand it.

xxbackhillxx 01-12-2005 07:27 PM

yea ive heard stories about a japanese professor at OU that can barely speak english.

im not sure about the placement testing. 5 is the highest you can get on an AP examination, so i guess they took that as a good enough source to go off of. ill ask my buddy next time i see him.

notsoaveragejoe, i tutor no one unless its for rediculous amounts of money. i seldom study or do my own hw anymore. btw, are you a senior or junior?

Warthog 01-13-2005 01:23 AM

i got a 4 on my AP test and was able to get 4 credits for Calc 1 and skip into Calc 2, no placement test.

i got a 4 on AP English and they gave me 4 credits for Rhetoric 150, and didn't force me to take 151 - so i never had to take a college class that was purely about writing papers. thank god.

xxbackhillxx 01-13-2005 04:30 AM

maybe i will have to take a placement test to get into advanced calc 2 afterall. oh well no biggie... just another stupid test.

it must be nice being one of those people who were born smart...

I'm a senior at NDP... I had to take Algebra 1/2 my freshman year at NDP because my middle school math program was a bad joke, and no one really learned anything. Needless to say im in honors pre-calc right now.

PS - are there any pre-reqs for that dual business/engineering program you mentioned at State?

-joe-

Warthog 01-13-2005 07:35 AM

tom i think the placement test is just to determine whether you start in pre-calc or calc 1. i'm not sure if there's any other tests. i would call and find out...also, they often sound very strict on what they allow and don't allow, but usually if you go to them separately or bitch about something enough, they'll cave in and give you what you want. :)

xxbackhillxx 01-13-2005 08:51 AM

well i guess ill have to bitch n moan till i get my way lol.

joe, i dont know anything about that program except that there is such a program that exists. when you go to state over the summer and register for classes you can find out more about it. did you get an email about visiting state in late january and february? i got one and dont know wtf to do with it. also, do you know clark yosin or corey mason? i think they used to go to ndp. i used to play hockey with them.

AaronGTR 01-13-2005 08:57 AM

I feel stupid now....

I'm horrible at math. Sucked at it all thru high school. Good in the other subjects though like science, english, and history. Too bad I never had a chance to go to college, but it all sounds very confusing to me. :( But hey, I can fix my own car instead of paying someone else to do it. lol

Nikki 01-13-2005 10:37 AM

I'm with you Aaron, I couldn't pass those math classes to save my life. I was good with English, History and even some of the sciences, but math for me was like trying to read an unknown foreign language.

Hodge 01-14-2005 05:20 PM

well first off i spotted a red GT or SE now i dont remember. just with parking on fog lights on and i flashed the brights, i dono if hes on here. But when it comes to math, right now i have ALL solid A's and then this stupid lady teacher i have, we do not get along... sucks because i have like a solid C in her fricken class ;/ i've only had very few teachers like this and blows.

AaronGTR 01-14-2005 06:37 PM

Everybody has a teacher like that. I had a social studies teacher my sophomore year that took immediate disliking to me. Treated me like dirt and was failing me even though I turned in every assignment. He basically didn't like that my world view disagreed with his so he found reasons to grade me down. He even gave me an F on an opinion piece he asked us to write. Everyone knows you can't get an F for that because it's subjective... it's my opinion. Anyway after a couple weeks I went to my counseler and ask to switch to a different class. She said it was too late to do that. She eventually did it when I said I wouldn't go back to his class and threatened to get my parents involved. After passing the first symester with a B+, I went back and asked her if she still thought the first teacher wasn't failing me intentionally. Never would admit it though...

xxbackhillxx 01-14-2005 08:46 PM

who was the teacher?

AaronGTR 01-15-2005 05:31 PM

Mr. Wroth, guys who looks kinda like ghandi with side burns.
