tuning help

let me start out by saying i am brand new to tuning and have really no knowledge on what i am doing. therefore i am looking for some direction and help on properly tuning my car.

i have a brand new engine with the following:
GT32R Turbo
Cam
36lbs Injectors

i know i need to tune the following:
EGR delete
Change Injector value

Basically I just want to get this engine running right with what it has. Any help & direction is appreciated.

First thing first, which tuning software? HpTuners or DHP?

Second, I'd read up on their website for hours.

Third, do you have a wideband? A nearby dyno with compatible tuning software?

Fourth, I'm listening in... I hope to grab up a lot of the same info myself.

alright. so i installed my AFPR and i cant seem to narrow down the pressure. i have GTP injectors. which are 36lbs, correct? according to grand prix forums, pressure should be at about 45 psi at idle, key-on should be about 60 psi, and WOT should be about 70 psi. my pressure gauge read 45 psi while idiling, but at key on, i cant seem to get it to 60 and the car dies/runs like crap. do i need to adjust anything with DHP?

stewartfn18 06-11-2010 05:59 PM

are u sure the calculation u used to adjust ifr was right

stewartfn18 06-11-2010 06:00 PM

whats your afr doing

eckoxl 06-11-2010 06:00 PM

yup.

eckoxl 06-11-2010 06:01 PM

a light show from 13.3 to 18 when driving. idle at 15.1

stewartfn18 06-11-2010 06:14 PM

thats wayyyy to much. something aint right
i think it may be the pressure

stewartfn18 06-11-2010 06:14 PM

those pressure may only be for the gtp

Im assuming since you are asking how to change injector value, that you are driving around with stock injector values?

If so, your causing lots of problems by doing that.

eckoxl 06-11-2010 08:06 PM

injector values have been changed to the new ones for about a month. ran fine on stock FPR.

westerndragon 06-11-2010 08:53 PM

i cant remember the site i got the stock BIN files from but im sure you can find BIN files that have been edited with similar mods to look at....wait for aaron to chime in hes the man with this stuff

Stock fuel pressure on the 2000 GA is 48psi and 55psi WOT. I would be highly surprised if you got to 60psi while not in boost yet. You can run a little higher or lower pressure at idle, but you need to adjust the value in your IFR table then since the injector flow rate changes with pressure. Yes, the pcm will adjust for that on it's own a little with fuel trims, but you really should try and adjust for it some yourself to keep fuel trims inline. I think 46-48psi at idle is a good spot to be at.

What are you using in your IFR table? I know the DHP tuner has some pre-made files in the import folder for IFR tables for different injector sizes. My experience has been that they will get you close, but they aren't quite perfect. They were setup for grand prixs and not optimized on grand ams.

I'm running the same injectors with a caspers AFPR set at 48psi at 14 In/Hg of vacuum at 800rpm at idle. My IFR table is 228 across the board, slightly richer than the DHP scale. Give those a try and see how it works. It sounds to me though like your numbers shouldn't be that far off where you should be, so if the car is running that bad I wonder if there is some other problem? Well, try that first and let us know how it works.

I got the regulator set at that, but the car was still running like ****. I got irritated so I stopped for tonight. I'm going to pull the plugs and check if they are fouled.

For what it is worth, my injector table for the Trailblazer injectors is set at 299.7796 mSec/Gram across the board. Based on the fact that the Trailblazer injectors are around 26.37lbs at 55 psi.

I now have both DHP and HPT setups.... HPT is nice for the scanner however DHP with Tiny Tuner gives me access to more files.

Are you able to access any other injector-related files with that, like voltage offsets?

The following tables are available in Tiny Tuner for the injectors.

Fuel Injector
2 Speed Fuel Pump
Base Pulse Width Correction vs Fuel Pump Flow
End of Injection Pulse vs Coolant Temp
Fuel Pump High Speed Disable Flow
Fuel Pump High Speed Disable Ign. Volts
Fuel Pump High Speed Disable MAP
Fuel Pump High Speed Enable Flow
Fuel Pump High Speed Enable Ign. Volts
Fuel Pump High Speed Enable MAP
Fuel Pump Prime Tme
Injector Flow Rate
Injector Offset vs Battery Voltage
Injector Pulse Boundary
Injector Skew Percent
Injector Skew Percent Rough Idle
Low Pulse Width Injector Offset vs Pulse Width vs MAP
Minimum Injector Pulse Width

If you are interested, I have attached a document showing the 439 tables that are accessable with Tiny Tuner for my 01.

Thanks, that looks pretty complete. I'll have to look into acquiring Tiny Tuner, then. You never know when those files will prove useful, especially when going to a different type injector.

AaronGTR 06-14-2010 04:55 PM

Yeah, honestly I haven't even looked at the tiny tuner yet. I've been learning plenty just playing with the basic DHP tuner. Sounds like I need to check it out though... I had no idea it added access to that many extra parameters.
